I saw this small tree in bloom in late May 2014 near the campus of UTArlington, Arlington, Texas. Can you identify it?

It sure is a pretty tree and the leaves look very familiar; it kind of remind me of Rhus but I'm just not sure and will look forward to hearing what it turns out to be.

For comparison:
Shining Sumac (Rhus copallina)
Flame-Leaf Sumac (Rhus lanceolata)

Well, I guess Winged Sumac isn't right because the flowers on your plant appear to be white and the winged sumac has yellow blooms but the Prairie Flameleaf Sumac (Rhus lanceolata) looks to have white blooms. Here's a couple more links with photos:

I hope others (especially those from that part of Texas) will see this and pop in soon with some suggestions because I'm probably way off! Smiling

To my old eyes it looks like some kind of nut tree.

I agree with Lin, it looks like Sumac. Rhus lanceolate is the closest match I can find.

Could also be an ash, for instance Fraxinus ornus.

I thought of Fraxinus too and F. pennsylvanicus grows in Texas but I couldn't tell from photos that I viewed. There are a few Ash trees that grow in Texas but I didn't find F. ornus listed anywhere. http://texastreeplanting.tamu....

Tree of Heaven (Ailanthus altissima) is what it reminds me of. Its very invasive here in all of zone nine. Grows very quickly. They have a rather unpleasant odor when cut. Very messy several times a year. Looks great but....I hope my guess is wrong.

Good eye Leslieray! I hadn't even thought of Tree of Heaven (Ailanthus altissima) and I think you may have nailed it and although it's very pretty, it is indeed a very invasive tree.

I would be careful handling it until you know what it is. I believe Sumac has an oil similar to poison ivy that gives some people a rash. ?
