Does this look like your plant? 'Dorado' is a cultivar with yellow edges.
Dracaena (Dracaena fragrans 'Janet Craig Compacta')

Not at all like that Compacta, and the tag does say Dorado (and Dracaena deremensis), so maybe there are some with yellow and some without?

It looks like Dracaena 'Janet Craig' to me also. Dracaena deremensis 'Dorado' definitely has yellow to chartreuse colored leaf margins. I wonder if the plant was tagged incorrectly?

Edited to add links to photos of D. deremensis 'Dorado' showing the leaf color:

Dorado definitely has the distinct leaf margins. So, should this one be moved to the generic dracaena entry or the Janet Craig entry?

I've grown 'Janet Craig' numerous times over the years and it looks exactly like Janet Craig to my eyes but then again, I'm not so great at comparing photos for identity.

Oddly, the tag is from Exotic Angel Plants even though the photo on their website shows yellow edges. Perhaps it is a Janet Craig.

Knowing it came from EA, unless there's something they're selling but missing from website, or it was variegated but has faded, it has to be JCC by process of eliminating the others. Everything else is variegated, except the one other solid one, a bright lime colored 'Limelight.'
http://exoticangel.com/plant-l...

It's possible that somebody shopping before you got there picked up the tag from a Dorado plant and put it in the pot of the one you got by accident.

Their labels tend to be somewhat unreliable too, even when still stuck in the intended plant. For example, their Tradescantia page shows T. zebrina on the 'Red Hill' entry but they sell both Cyanotis somaliensis and T. cerinthoides with that tag, but not T. zebrina. There is no such cultivar as 'Red Hill.' Their entry for T. fluminensis shows a pic of what looks like T. cerinthoides, too hairy to be T. fluminensis. I have all of these and once you have them around for a while, they're not so similar. They have a 'dog tail' labeled Aporocactus that's really something else that doesn't come to mind at the moment. Whenever there's a tag, I always take a pic & ask forum. A surprising number of times, the tags are wrong, from EA and other growers. It can happen for a lot of reasons at the grower & after, at the store.

Let me be the first to tell you that EA plant labels are quite often incorrect ... well, the tags are correct but the tags end up on the wrong plants. A couple of years ago I was in our Home Depot Garden center and at checkout I mentioned to the cashier that I noticed many of the house plants with incorrect name tags. She said it just so happened a lady from the vendor was there and called her over. I told her what I'd found and she asked if I would mind showing her. She was very apologetic and began pulling tags out of the soil of many, many plants in that section. She found even more than I had and she told me that she thought it was probably due to the fact that some of the nursery workers were non-english speaking and they just placed labels in pots at random. I told her that I know sometimes customers will pull a tag to read it too and not put it back in the correct pot but she said that she thought every single plant that had just been delivered to that HD was mis-tagged.

Hm. Okay, then. Smiling If the photo on the grower's website doesn't match what I bought, I'll ask for help with identification instead of believing the tags. And with EA plants, in general, I'll apply caution!

I wonder if you could contact EA and send a photo to see if they could correctly ID the plant?

Great idea! Smiling And if they are mistagging the plants, maybe a little feedback will help them correct that.

Exotic Angel (Hermann Engelmann Greenhouses): http://articles.orlandosentine... was bought out by Costa Farms: http://www.costafarms.com/abou... last year: http://www.gpnmag.com/costa-fa... Costa Farms is a very large wholesaler who distributes plants all over the country to big box stores like Home Depot, Lowes and WalMart as well as to grocery stores and other stores. I doubt feedback would make much difference to such a huge company ... when they deal with thousands and thousands of plants it's probably pretty much impossible for them to physically look at each plant before it's shipped to be certain it has the correct tag stuck in the soil.

If one is not certain of a plants identity, they should definitely post photos here on the ATP Plant ID Forum http://garden.org/forums/view/... and I'm betting that 99% of the time they will get a correct ID.

They do care! Justin Hancock is the liaison between the company (Costa Farms) and the public, and he does respond to correspondence.

Did you attempt to contact EA/CF?

I think this is a pic of the same plant?

I know it is easy to knock the big growers and the big box stores, but when I watch the videos of the large growers, the equipment, the personnel, the quality control, etc. that they have in their programs and when I see the amount of research that goes into development of their plants I am always left feeling that they do care about the plants they grow. Where and when and how all that so often falls apart is beyond my understanding.

@Calif_Sue, if you are able to move these pics to the generic Dracaena entry, that's probably best without further feedback, &/or more pics from @indoorplants.

I did contact the grower but haven't heard back from them. I don't know if this one is a Dorado, but it's definitely *much* larger than Compacta. And, yes, it's true that I haven't been around! Been increasing my collection, organizing it all, learning what propagates well and what doesn't, and readying myself for sales.
