Over the years there have been acquisitions that proved to not be what was ordered. After a brief bit of disappointment I don't get too upset. It's all too easy to mix up rhizomes just moving them around and replanting. Usually I've tried to contact the seller and see if they know, but most of the time that has not been very productive. If you've watched what I've put in the database, you know I have a penchant for arilbreds, but other classes and historics also have been welcome. I continue to let the NOIDS grow as long as they will, but they may not get preferential treatment. Here are some photos from over the years.

'is it really PINK NIGHTIE' That's how this one got tagged. That was the purchase and the color is correct, but the form wasn't believable. I never did establish the identity one way or the other:
Thumb of 2015-02-02/needrain/380d23

'not ASPECTS OF LOVE'. At the time I really did want Aspects of Love, but this isn't it. Never did manage to acquire it either.
Thumb of 2015-02-02/needrain/3e3189

'not BYE BYE BLACKBIRD'. An attractive bloom, but not even close to black!
Thumb of 2015-02-02/needrain/789a5a

'not CELESTE AZUL'. It's an arilbred iris, but not that one. You'd think with the fewer numbers they could be identified, but it's as hard to get an id on them as any other iris.
Thumb of 2015-02-02/needrain/61f8a2

'not CORNING'. Too bad. I think CORNING is probably extinct but there's always hope it's quietly growing in some old garden waiting to be found. It was suggested that this imposter wasn't even an arilbred, but an old historic TB instead. I don't think that's right. I believe it's an AB and an interesting one. But it may be an old seedling that was never registered.
Thumb of 2015-02-02/needrain/ac26b1

'not TUL KEREM'. It took me some time before I realized the mistake. Pretty color, nice blue beards. Really pretty blue beards. TUL KEREM is registered as having brown beards. I think even a colorblind person wouldn't have made that mistake.
Thumb of 2015-02-02/needrain/7bc7cf

'not likely TURKISH HEART'. I grew this for several years before anyone questioned it. It looks correct for everything except the shape of the signal pattern. That really should be heart shaped. It's close, but no go.
Thumb of 2015-02-02/needrain/4e6f7a

'not MOVE OVER'. Almost certain it was LORELEY instead, but I never got one and grew them side by side.
Thumb of 2015-02-02/needrain/e6d854

'not OMAR'S SISTER'. A cute SDB of some sort, not the AB it was supposed to be.
Thumb of 2015-02-02/needrain/0cd954

'not ORMOHR'. It's clearly a Mohr style arilbred, but a much later edition than Ormohr which, according to reliable folks who grew it back in the day was a much strappier bloom. I tried hard to identify this, but never did.
Thumb of 2015-02-02/needrain/7cc810

'not TWIST OF FATE'. I didn't get this from the most reliable source, but it matched the description close enough. Then I saw the REAL Twist of Fate blooming. I just came home and pulled up the garden id tag.
Thumb of 2015-02-02/needrain/eacf4b

'not WILLIAM MOHR'. At one time I think I had a name that was probably good for this one. A historic TB, not an arilbred at all. The color and markings on this are pretty lurid and distinctive. I never attempted to nail it down to be certain, though.
Thumb of 2015-02-02/needrain/cd160f

This mis-identified arilbred is surely a registered cultivar, but I never could identify it. It came via a plant sale. Really hard to go back and ask on those. I didn't know the person's name where it originated to ask.
Thumb of 2015-02-02/needrain/eb3db9

This unknown TB may have arrived with the correct name, but it never bothered to bloom and ended up blooming as an isolated unmarked fan. I went over all my lists of purchases looking specifically for something that matched the description but had never bloomed. Wasted my time. Nothing. It's also never bloomed again.
Thumb of 2015-02-02/needrain/0b25a0

An older gentleman sent me an arilbred rhizome he was growing. This SDB bloomed. He wasn't sure what it was. There are a LOT of SDBs in this color/pattern. Unknown or not, it has been the best SDB growing here. Generally they don't like my part of the world and don't bloom well.

Not even counting the grandmother pass along iris and some where I never took a photo. Incorrect or not, these gave me some pleasure. Some more than others.

How do you handle them, Sherry? That pinkish amoena might be easier to id than some. I just let mine grow for the most part, but some got moved to places that got ignored more than other. Do you try to id them, give them away, trash them?

Celia, that 'not Move Over' is almost certainly 'Loreley' and that is still available. It's a very distinctive iris. I don't think there has ever been another quite like it.

I've grown fond of them over the years, Donald.. I've tried to ID them without success so far.. They're both good, reliable growers and bloomers.

Some are in the past tense, Rob. I don't have all of them still growing. I need to do something to make the photo files more manageable. I think I'm going to delete all the unknowns that aren't growing here anymore. That will be a start. The files are a mess and I ran across these when I was trying to get photos in the database following the daily iris letter postings.

Celia,

Try Bluebird Iris Haven http://bluebirdhavenirisgarden.com/siteV2/catalog.html

I've ordered from them in the past, but it's been several years. I acquired some interesting plants that weren't readily available elsewhere. I was happy. You might try communicating with Mary before you place an order.

It is listed at several locations but probably the one with the best reputation and best selection of historic irises is Bluebird Haven Iris Garden:

Donald, probably not it but your ASPECTS OF LOVE reminds me of an older bloom of:
Thumb of 2015-02-02/Phillipb2/e04154 Awake The Dawn (older bloom)Thumb of 2015-02-02/Phillipb2/dce8b7 (new bloom)

I looked in the ATP database and there's not any pictures of Awake the Dawn. Sad

It's very sad that all the other pictures are no ID's because they are all so very beatuiful!

Celia, I have lots of Loreley, and would be happy to share, Donald, Loreley has a most beautiful fragrance, you can't miss it, if you'd like a rhizome to test with, I'd be happy to send you one. I think by looking at your photo though that it's most likely Loreley.

Here are a couple of mine that were wrong ones.

Not Honky Tonk Hussy, which I have ordered this year from Blue J iris.

I like this one because it is velvety and has a mustard beard.

Not Lemon Puff, which I ordered again last summer

Even though these are NoIDs I do afford them garden space. I have even bought Noids that were beautiful and wanted them for the bloom and fragrance. I have one little SDB I bought last spring at a plant sale that was labeled 'pink on white' and even though I have no idea what it will be I could not resist and I am hoping it blooms this spring.

I love my garden.... and Jesus, and coffee, and naps.......

Tom, that would be great! Let me know if I have anything you'd like.

It's kind of disheartening to wait so long for a bloom and find it isn't what you thought. I had 2 rhisomes of what I thought was Pink Attraction that turned out to be Elizabethan Age and Ambroisie.

Tom,

"Donald, Loreley has a most beautiful fragrance, you can't miss it, if you'd like a rhizome to test with, I'd be happy to send you one."

Thanks so much for the offer. I'm not growing it now. I was reasonably satisfied it was Loreley, but the ongoing drought took it out. Growing conditions here tend to not be good in the best of times, so droughts take a heavy toll even on native plants. Water is such an issue for me that I can't adapt easily and pay a price. It's a cool bloom the way patches of the falls color show up inside the standards. They are so sharp and distinct. I don't think there's another one like it. I got to enjoy it for a few years.
Donald
