"G"..Garden art is the first thing I think of. Gazing balls, statuary, bird baths, bird houses, metal work, ...animals, gnomes, angels, dragons, wind spinners, wind chimes...
Several years ago my son bought me a set for poetry stones that you make using letter stamps with cement. There are several different sayings scattered around the garden, one is "Weeds free, pick your own".

Very nice garden art Char!!! That's one thing I really don't have a lot of. I think I need to remedy that.

"G" for me will be "Garden Daylily" this may not be a term with an official meaning, but it is an important term for many daylily growers. It refers to a daylily variety that is not chosen for hybridizing but is selected strictly for the beauty and performance of selected traits it has that makes it a great overall performing plant to be featured in the garden. I just made up a list of over twenty for my "Garden Daylily" want list.
Here are just a few on my new list: These were chosen mostly for rust resistance and clump forming.

I have plenty of garden art to the point of swapping things out from year to year. This year have ordered a large wind spinner from Plow & Hearth when it was a special on QVC, so it also has solar led lights which will give it night time interest. My sister and I always were on the lookout for garden art, it was great fun. Now I only add maybe a single piece each year.

Char, I love, love, love Gazing Globes! I have had them off and on in the garden for years. ("Off and on" because the glass ones tend to break. The two I have right now are not, I think, glass.)

I also love other Garden Art, but that's something that is very much a matter of personal taste. In my garden, gnomes need not apply.

(I told this to DH when I may have (stupidly) put garden art on my Christmas list last fall. He and DD got me a resin Godzilla snatching up and devouring garden gnomes. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00JF8381G/ I still haven't put it out; I think I am going to stage it by/under some ferns.)

I don't have any pictures with Gazing Globes in them, but I do have a picture of a Blue Heron metal art piece which my sister gave us when we bought this property over a decade ago. It stands guard on one of the further creek banks. (This picture was taken last spring, shortly before Easter, if I recall correctly. You need to click on the picture to see the "heron". My sister bought it because our creek is occasionally visited by two species of Egrets, who dive off the bridge and fish (for mosquito fish and crayfish) in the creek.)

Sorry to hear about the Gall Midge Hilary. I've never seen them and can only imagine the disappointment of needing to remove the buds.

The Great Garden Gnome Massacre That is just way to funny. The heron with calla lilies (? ) is so elegant. Garden art to me is like hanging a picture on the wall or the knickknacks around the house...finishing touches showing a bit of the garden owners personality, something to bring a smile, laugh ...

Gorgeous, giant and green throats made me think of another "G", Gossard! Jamie has intros that could fit those terms.

Gazebo & Grill we had one over the grill last year and added one over the patio this year. It's a great place to cool off from weeding or to contemplate the garden.

Germination... Some sprouting today.

Now that I'm back from the hardware store, I'm looking at this thread again. I was hurried when I posted earlier... I wanted to post quickly, then get to the hw store and back again so DH could take my furmobile and our dog to the dog park. (We need a dog smilie!)

Larry, you make an excellent point about garden plants. Thanks for posting an easy shopping list . Seriously, I am going to go look up the plants on your list as I need more rust resistant plants. (I just checked out some seedlings, still several per a 4" pot.... many have rust. I guess I won't be planting out those seedlings in the new bed we are about to construct. (I hope I have enough left over that I can plant!)

Ashton and Terry - great germination photo! My seeds from 2014 are all stratifying in the fridge right now... I should go check on them...

Sue, I haven't used a mulch although this year I'm going to mulch with horse manure as there are horses across the road from me and the owner has a heap that is well rotted. Someone told me to disturb the soil around the base of the daylilies but if neighbours don't pick off affected buds what chance do I stand? It's strange that some earlies are not affected while Outrageous & Edge of Darkness are a real target.

Thanks, Hilary. There is a lengthy dissertation on the gall midge that is written in German. It describes experiments and their biology and I got the impression from what I managed to translate with translator software that a mulch, something like coarse wood chips maybe, might be helpful. It's so long ago now since I did that that I don't remember the details. The dissertation gives emergence temperatures and all kinds of useful things. It really needs someone who understands German and entomology to go through it and pick out what might be useful.

Agreed if the neighbours don't do something they'll likely come back (the midges, not the neighbours , although the midges aren't terribly strong fliers from what I understand. Are there neighbours with daylilies very close?

Have you thought about keeping those two cultivars as "trap" plants like some people do with early yellows where the latter are attacked? Maybe there's something about your climate that delays their emergence, although you'd think that would affect the flowering times of the daylilies too.

are these gall midges the same thing as thrip or different?
