@Oberon Hi Mary. This is a Japanese Maple. I have some red twig dogwoods in the back and the bark does look similar.

I love the Japanese maples and wish more grew here. But they have to be protected from the moose or they are left with just a few twigs. I have no more room in the back yard for another tree, even a short one.
