As anyone post they have received or dug PBF I am updating the list. I had several of mine in the dig yesterday that showed PBF and included those as well.

Just wanted to say thanks for the PBF list, and posting a link. I thought Romantic Evening surely had PBF, and couldn't believe Happenstance did after viewing the list. Thought I had these two Iris turned around in the planting bed.

You can also go to the Iris Database here:

The Irises Database

and click on "search by characteristics" which gets you to this page:

http://garden.org/plants/group...

Then check the box next to "Purple Based" in the Foliage Field, and you'll see a list of about 700 irises that are known to have purple based foliage.

??? Is Purple Based Foliage something you specifically hybridize for because it appeals to you or is it linked to other traits? Why the emphasis on the purple foliage? Curious, but no clue! Hilarious! Hilarious!

only some cultivars have it, and the in varying degrees, so it's a helpful tool in identification. There are so many very similar color patterns, that anything that's "different" about them, becomes important....Arlyn

I don't know if anyone specifically hybridizes for purple based foliage, but it can be quite attractive. Many irises with purple based foliage also show some purple on the flowering stalk. Often, the spathe that covers the flower buds will at least be edged in purple:

Sometimes, the stem itself is purple. It's difficult to capture the color in a picture, but it's usually very striking in person:

Some hybridizers HAVE specifically tried to create irises that are both variegated and purple based. It appears to be a difficult achievement, because only a handful have been introduced.

As Arlyn said, it's useful for figuring out the identity of some varieties. It's also handy when separating clumps in the garden after the flowers are gone.

Thumbs up

Thanks for the input. I've seen this thread before, but was always at a loss to know why such effort was going into the list.
