Today I bought two, Manhattan Island and Black Touch. Walmart had the best selection while Home Depot had a dreadful selection and Lowe's was between the two.

The ones I bought came three to a package for $9.98 - hard to beat that price.

They also had Lady Darlene, Onesta, Mystery Day, Pineland's Princess, and a bag of 6 that were Arabian Night with some other one, which I've forgotten.

I was wrong. The package of Manhattan Island has 4 tubers! That's 4 sets of tubers for $9.98 so there easily could be more that sprout and some, still in the bag, have sprouted. If anyone is still thinking about trying to grow dahlias, it's a great buy!

We went to HD to check out trellises on Friday. By then they had rows and rows (unbelievable in 24 hours time) of bagged plants as well as fruits like blueberries, blackberries, grapes, and much more.

Looks like they beat out even Walmart. I bought Poppy Red Orientalis, Echinacea Purpurea, Clematis h.f. Young. No dahlias though I was tempted. they had some real beauties as you mentioned and listed.

Yep the beginning of March and all the big box store start putting them out - even here where you can't plant them outside until the end of May.

My issue with buying Dahlias at any of the big box stores, is they are all from Holland - and very often mislabeled.

Geof - we have a foot of snow and more is falling every minute. More expected on Thursday. No chance of planting them outside until mid to late May here.

You're right! Last year a package of two, labeled Lady Darlene, ended up being Pineland's Pam and one that might be Kalinka. This year I ordered Lady Darlene from a reliable nursery so I hope it's right.

Mary and I have a great dahlia buddy, Dan, on "the other channel", who warns about checking to see the tubers aren't soft. Good idea. I did check and the tubers I bought are firm.

I found you, pirl. It's me, Annette( had to use a different name )
Koger's had a nice selection, but I bet they won't last long. $2.97 per tuber/pkg.

So good to have you here, Annette/Nanny/AFlowerChild!

The better the packaging, the more colorful the photo, the quicker they sell out, I'm sure.

Can you see the grass yet in Kentucky? No sign of it here.

Hi Annette. I AM going to the post office today. Sounds like you also scored at Walmart. I am fighting myself right and left not to go back. I figure if I can hold out long enough they will be gone.

We do have grass in sight! In spots, but hey, I'll take it. Mostly where the snow has been shoveled, or where it is really wet ground. But the snow is receding slowly and that gives us hope! We are up to a balmy 46* which feels quite warm in comparison to our previous temps.
I bought 9 different Dahlias at Kroger, Blue Bell, Fluerel, Duet, Seattle, Lupin White, Thomas Edison, Bristol Stripe, Purpleliscious and Hawaii. All dinnerplates, No real rhyme or reason, I just liked the colors. I could have bought more, but I figured I better buy some groceries too. Or else I must have an uprising on my hands. lol

Hmmmm….Thomas Edison a "dinner plate"? I think some companies advertise all dahlias as dinner plates these days - As I remember, Thomas Edisons are 4-6" - they are a very nice deep purple, but they are not big ones. I am not familiar with the others.

I agree, Geof. It's all promotion and not factual.

I've had Seattle, Duet and Hawaii, but not the others. None were dinnerplate dahlias. Just enjoy them for the blooms as many of us do.

Annette, I mailed the box yesterday and included the ADS description on each as well as ht and size bloom in my garden. There is at least one true dinner plate there that grew to 11" across even for me up here.
