drdawg said:This Phal. (Dtps. Luchia 'Pink') has been opening up for six weeks. The last bud just opened a few days ago and all the flowers are on an old stem. That's the reason I don't cut the stems off my Phal. after blooming. It will probably bloom well into summer.

I had a Phal in my old house that I didn't cut the stem off of, and it rebloomed. I read somewhere that you should let it rest, but I didn't wanna. Thumbs down Hilarious!

I don't know why an orchid needs to "rest". Do they have a time-out in nature? Perhaps those in Central and South America have siestas. Whistling yh

I just let my orchids decide what it likes to do..if it shows it still wants to bloom I let it be..if it starts to show it wants to rest, then I let it rest, so it can concentrate on forming newer roots and leaves.

My hearing is not the best I know, but I just can't get my orchids to tell me what in the heck they want and need. Whistling I know, from hearing people talk and reading so many posts here on ATP, that many never see their orchids bloom. I guess, like people, some need more rest than others. Shrug!

I picked this beauty up today at Wal-Mart for $12 (does this look familar, @Cinta? How is yours doing? I think I remember yours having yellow on its leaves though). I rarely see this particular Bromeliad at Lowes here, and lately it seems to be the "more common" ones all the time. That being said, one this size usually runs about $20 at Lowes, so $12 was a deal for me. I do see a pup forming at the base and the flowers haven't opened yet, so I'll post again when they appear.

Now lets hope I don't kill it. Rolling on the floor laughing

Planto, I think that coloration you see is the "flowering". The Neoregelia does not grow a stem/stalk as far as I know. Here is one that I grow, and all mine are just now starting to turn color, first burgundy and now magenta. I have grown mine for the last 18 months and they were approximately 3" tall when I got them. They are now 12+" tall and 18" wide. This is Neoregelia 'Voodoo Doll' and the picture was taken 7 days ago. More leaves have changed to magenta since then.

Yes Planto I have that one and the one with the varigated leaves and pink. The one I purchased with pups is still growing good the other three look like they are dying but no pups.

That is pretty and a good price. At Lowes they were 19.00.

I was thinking of selling my plants for around $10.00, with no tax, or three for $25.00. Far too cheap, huh?

Drdawg,
I believe you are right about the coloring (they call it "blushing," right?).

Here's what I believe are soon to be flowers (I tried to get closer, but holding an ipad above a plant and not being able to see what you're "shooting" was difficult enough lol):
Thumb of 2015-05-12/Plantomaniac08/29d602

And here's a side view (I also don't see a stem?).
Thumb of 2015-05-12/Plantomaniac08/af5ab8

Do you know what type of Bromeliad this is/the cultivar? I did my best to try and find a name, but I know you have more experience with these sorts of things.

Blushing is the correct term. I don't know what you have. I only grow two Neoregelia varieties and only purchased those seedlings to see if I could grow them to mature plants. I don't know much about the bromeliad family of plants. Sorry. Shrug! I know more about orchids. Whistling

Dawg,
Oh, it's okay. Smiling I assumed you knew about Bromeliads (my mistake) too. Too bad I'm an orchid killer. I'm determined to try a Dendrobium one day though. Now if only I could find one in town...

I guess it didn't sink in when you said 3" tall that they were tiny lol. I meant to comment earlier on your 'Voodoo Doll,' but got distracted. Whistling I've never seen a magenta colored one, I like. Lovey dubby

@Cinta,
What other three, are they the small ones that look like they're dying (the Crypthanthus)? Crying
