OK -- I gotta tell ya a story. In 1985 when we purchased this farm, it took us awhile to conclude all of our business in Illinois, so we couldn't move right away. We would make trips down for a few days and move pickup trucks of stuff each time -- one time we rented a small moving van and brought a good-sized load of some furniture and boxes of books and misc. stuff. As spring came on, the grass began to grow here and was getting taller and taller. We had no way to mow it -- coming from Chicago suburbs, we only had a push-mower -- which couldn't quite cut it here! But on one trip down I was fascinated to see deep purple blooms here and there in the by now very tall grass. On investigation, I saw that they had blade-type leaves and gorgeous deep purple blooms. I did not know what they were. Thirty years later, I learned today that they are Louisiana Black Gamecock Irises. Cool, huh?

We did finally purchase a tractor and bush-hogged the grass -- but not before I dug up every one of those strange plants so they wouldn't get whacked off by the bush-hog. That's when I discovered their weird root system. I planted them in an area together, and kind of forgot about them. A couple years later they bloomed again -- apparently forgiving me for interrupting their free lifestyle. Smiling

What I can't figure out is how they became so scattered around the property. No one would plant them in the middle of a yard, I wouldn't think. Our house had been empty for a couple of years before we bought it, and had been rented out for quite a few years before that -- so there was no one I could ask. It was originally a working farm -- cattle and crops -- and the fence for the cattle was a very short way from the back of the house, so there was really very little backyard. And yet -- there they were -- scattered throughout the property behind the house -- waiting for me. Smiling

Several years ago I got some JIs from a co op that had names assigned to them, but they're unregistered seedlings, that weren't clones. I got 3 of each and when they bloomed saw that they varied from each other, so the names didn't really mean anything. At that time I had never grown JIs, so since the price was right, I just tried them to see how they would do for me. They did well, and convinced me I need to try more Smiling

Mary Ann, that is so cool! I love finding tenacious garden plants long after the gardener has left.

Mary Ann - Blue J is the only place I know that has it, and they have a whole section of "flatties." Very very affordable too!

Now for a flattie that is not affordable but that I love love love, and will buy when the price comes down.

The photos are all so welcome as it continues to snow.

We have Sib's, many JI's and many LA's as well as the typical bearded irises.

I'm with you, Mary Ann, trying to keep the LA's in one area just doesn't work well. They actually spread too much for me but at least the deer don't like them at all - a huge saving grace. Each time I dig them up I am amazed at their networking underground.

Hurray! Hurray! Hurray!

I just love your shots Arlene. Your garden is so nicely laid out!

Really like Prairie Glory and Frilled Enchantment. I think they would be pretty as a patch together.

Black Gamecock is very good for some northern gardens. It was thought that LA could not grow here until that one was tried. We have an I. setosa seedling, but I don't have a photo. That also is native to the USA.

Unlike Arlene, my dutch iris just keep coming back. At this point their bulbs are buried under sod, but they still come back! Their foilage isn't worth a darn but the bloom is pretty.

Frilled Enchantment isn't capable of a bad photo and deserves a garden just to showcase it.

Arlene, I'm so happy you've joined in! Your garden is one of the most magnificent I've ever seen photos of!

Those Louisiana Irises do travel don't they! I've only tried 3 varieties, but I have found them to be care free- they thrived and bloomed their hearts out even during the neglect years completely enveloped by weeds.

I think I'm also just a bit too far north for Dutch Iris to return, and I surely wish that wasn't the case. Odd to me that they survive that first winter with no issues, but out of a dozen, one might show up the 2nd year. They're so easy to stick little clumps here and there among other plants, and are gorgeous. But I'm too cheap to treat them as annuals, so I'll enjoy yours Leslie Smiling

Now on to my Noid Japanese: These just do their own thing. Took about three years to start blooming, but then I wasn't helping them along. I will need to thin them this year.

Sort of Black Gamecockish. Got taken out by a tornado, but hope it shows up again this year.

Leslie, that's how I did with JIs too, just planted them and waited. Just as you experienced, it took a couple of years to settle in, but then, they just took care of themselves. Now that I've come to love them I have a "recipe" for getting them going - work in some manure and moisture retention crystals upon planting, and they take off! I'm doing that with Sibs too, and they respond nicely.

Neal, I got very good advice from Pirl about giving them lots of manure and other helps so I am hoping my new ones will grow well and bloom by next year.
