Plantomaniac08 said:Okay well, I changed my mind on waiting to trim it back. It's supposed to be in the 70s-80s this week and no signs of frost. I know it's not Spring yet, so it could be getting cold again next week (I'm hoping it doesn't). Here's a picture of my 'Foxtail Fern' trimmed back. While trimming, I noticed a new growth already. Maybe this weekend I'll be able to repot it, it seems to be drying out pretty frequently.

I just hope I didn't cut too much off, lol.

Thanks for looking,

Wow, it's been a month already since I trimmed it back. I just wanted to provide an update as it has literally exploded. I'm kinda scared actually. Hilarious! I ended up trimming more old growth back, leaving about two or three "original" fronds. I can't wait to see what it does the rest of the year, considering we just hit Spring not too long ago (and I just fertilized it the other week).

It likes to eat. Mine nearly always responds by putting up new growth afterwards. I try to feed it regularly and use a stronger mix than for most potted plants.

In that case, it might try and eat me the next time I go outside, although I cannot attest to how flavorful I taste. Hilarious!

I am trying to be better this year about fertilizing my plants in general, so I won't be surprised if it becomes bigger than it was before I repotted it.

Wow, it's been over a month! I can't say my 'Foxtail Fern' is any bigger at this point, but it has buds all over it at least. Lovey dubby

Not to hijack your thread, but have to tell you that I had my 2 foxtails in large urns. I wanted to repot them into tubs. I had to enlist the Spousal Unit's assistance with getting them out of the urns. It took the sledge hammer to do it. LOL Yep, those nice urns were in pieces. Lots of pieces. Oops, I don't have a recent photo, this is while they were still in the big urns.

Here is what they look like now.

LOL Anna! Rather than bust the urns, I'd have waited for winter and left them out in it with plans to start over with a new plant! It would still have been difficult to extract, but probably doable.

I don't recall it having bloomed last year, so to see it covered in buds this year is exciting. Maybe it enjoyed being cut back more than I thought it would. Hilarious!

Planto

Edit: I found a picture of blooms from last August (boy, is my memory that bad?). I'm afraid to say that it wasn't as many flowers last year, but I didn't remember it had even bloomed, so I won't say that!

It's been a little over three months since I pruned my 'Foxtail' back and I finally got around to repotting it.

It's hard to gauge the size of the pot because of the angle, but I purchased a 13'' pot to replace the... (guessing here) 10 inch pot it was in. This one is considerable deeper though and I'm hoping it will be years before I have to consider dividing it up and/or repotting. Thanks again for looking.

Planto

Sorry for the poor quality, I took this at night. The growth present is all new. All of the original growth had been cut out over time. And, I accidently popped off a frond while trying to pull it out of the old pot. Oops.
