When is the best time to transplant my Iris? I planted a bunch of them in 3 of my raised beds. This will be their 2nd Spring coming up, and I would like to transplant them to other areas. Is this Spring a good time to do that? Here are a couple picture of them. You can see the 3 beds on the right in the first picture. And on the left in the 2nd picture. Should I dig them before they start to grow?

Late summer, early fall works well here. Aim to have them all done with about eight weeks left to grow new roots before the ground freezes.

August or September would be the best time to move them as this is their "dormant" time.

Hi Jeanne. If you transplant them before they bloom, then they likely won't bloom at all this year -- or at least very poorly. Give them at least a month after bloom-time, then dig them up, trim leaves into a fan shape, and replant. Giving them some time after bloom allows the rhizomes to store up energy after blooming, and for baby rhizomes to form along the mother rhizome. Smiling

We usually transplant in July to give them time for their roots to take hold before winter. Small just germinated seedlings are planted out before that time.

Thank You! everyone for your advice. I will go ahead and wait until after they bloom. I think these are mostly re-blooming white Iris. They were given to me so they are NOID. I will dig them up the middle to end of September since we get our first freeze in November usually.

Thanks Rob and Mary Ann,
In that view is the Mississippi River which you can't see and Wisconsin hillside on the other side. I really do feel like I am in Heaven up here on the ridge where there is almost always a breeze. I will try to find a few other pictures to post of our view. This spring I want to move the garden shed closer to the raised bed area and then have a pergola built on the other side of it. I want a porch swing in it so that I can sit there and look at the Mississippi River which you will see in the next photo that I post if I can find it.

Here is the view where we can see the Mississippi River. This is from our deck in back of our house. We very seldom see any boats on this part because it is pretty shallow. The deep part of the river is up against the bank on our side of the river.

Some beautiful views along the River. Missed your area in a round trip from Davenport to Dubuque on the Illinois side and return on the Iowa side. Great hills, great views, nice lodge and other places to visit. The gardens just make your area even better. Be sure to post the bloom time pictures!
