Dave,

I just tested by adding a couple of new plants to my private category and you seem to have fixed the bug! Hurray!

Thanks much! Big Grin

woofie said:And to be clear, if you want an entry to be private, you must make sure that it is only listed in a category that is marked "private." It will be come clearer as you add plants and categories. I have lots of seeds, that I just want to inventory, that are listed in categories that are marked "private."

(bolding in Woofie's note was added by me...)

I think this statement is incorrect -- I just logged out and looked at my plant list and found that there were fewer plants showing than what I knew there were supposed to be. It turned out that somehow I had (unintentionally) marked one of my categories, "need photo" as private, and anything I had in that category, even though those things were also in public categories such as "vegetables," "hybrid," or whatever, was not showing up. So It appears that if you have something in a private category, no matter what other categories it may be in, only you can see it in your list. If this makes any difference to anyone... Smiling

Sandy, that is interesting. It's never come up, so I didn't notice. Off to go see what happens, because I have at least one plant that is entered both as a plant (public view) and as in the contents of one of my seed boxes (private view).

And Sandy is absolutely correct. The plant that I have in a category that is public does not show up, because the seeds are in a private category. That is good to know. But I wonder if that's really how we want the lists to work?

That also sounds like a bug, the categories should be private if marked private, but if the plant is in a public category then it should show. I'm now going to check mine.

Well, it is definitely by design. If you add a plant to a private category, then that plant will not show.

Even if you add it to a public category, it still won't show because all plants categorized as private will be private.

Oh, I thought the categories were the deciding factor, so you can't have the same plant in two different categories ? Or you can't the same plant in two different categories have one private and one public ?

The last, the private always overrides any other category. I had a few in my Perennials and in Shrubs category and they show in in both.

I have set up a new category: "Test Plants" made it open and visible to all, I have tried to add the daylily "Cindy's Eye" that is already in my plant list(Category Rust Resistant Daylilies" open and visible to all) to that category, but I have not been able to do so.
Here are my steps:
1. Select Seedfork's Plant list
2. View and manage your list
3. Select Add a Plant
4. Type in Cindy's Eye-then select Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Cindy's Eye')
5.Check the box for Category Test Plants
6.Status: I have
7. Select Add Plant
8. Close
Then I still have "0" plants in Test Plants.
Where am I going wrong?

Seedfork,

If a plant is already in your list, you have to use the "edit this item" feature in your plant list to make category changes. If you try to do it through the "add a plant" form, then nothing happens since the plant is already in your list. The system does make it appear that you have made a change, though, so a notice of "This plant is already in your list" would be a good addition.

In your plant list, use the highlighted icon:

Danita,
Thank you so very much! Finally in has sunk into my head! I just hope I can remember that in case I ever do want to use that feature. I think marking the category private when actually it makes the category and the plant private sort of blew what I thought I knew and I got totally confused.

You can also do the edit from the entry itself. Click on the "In your List" on the left and it brings up your edit list.

No problem, Larry. Happy to help and thanks for the nut! Smiling
The fact that the system lets you go through that entire process of adding a plant that is already in your list without objection does make it confusing. If it isn't too much work to code, a notice of "This plant is already in your list" would be helpful in that circumstance, I think. Shrug!
