Streptocarpus take up more space, but they sure are worth it - the blooms are large and pretty! And many of the new and interesting cultivars come from Poland and Russia Thumbs up

I love Achimenes too. I grow a lot of Gesneriads and learned from attending the National Capitol Area Chapter of the National Gesneriad Society that you can add to your achimenes collection easily. Just make up a container of you potting mix. Break apart the achimenes rhizome...you can break it into tiny pieces...look closely. Spread each tiny little piece all over the growing medium just like you would seeds. Don't cover the pieces. Do cover the container to keep in the humidity with plastic wrap. Place under your plant lights or on a non-direct sun windowsill and in a few weeks you will have lots of babies!

I didn't know you could do leaf cuttings, but the stems do well. I've tried to collect seeds, but never had any luck. They may be so small I couldn't see them. Those rhizomes increase so rapidly after a season, I've never been inclined to try the crumbled up rhizomes. I know that no matter how hard you try to get all the old rhizomes for repotting, the old potting soil will give you a full pot of Achimenes, whether you wanted them or not Smiling . I have trouble finding homes for any excess, so I end up letting many of them simply freeze outside.

Yes, the seed is very small. It's hard to sowing. Leaf and stem cuttings light. I have been so long ago expanded. Many plants will be. Try it.

Many shapes and sizes for the rhizomes. Long and skinny, short and fat. But all crumble if not handled carefully. Mine have been left to multiply for years. I think they probably are cannibals now. More rhizomes than soil Smiling .

Will Eucodonias also work with a leaf cutting? I know they do with a stem cutting. The hybrids among this group (Achimenes, Eucodonia, Smithiantha) have been harder, but with patience they have worked with stem cuttings also.
