Comfrey is incredible. It's a soil builder, a fertilizer, a compost enhancer, has medicinal properties, is a good feed source for animals, and much more. Let's talk about this chief of plants.
I have last years leaves still around the plant. Can they be used to kick start the compost or do they need to be green? I usually crush them up and scatter them around.
They might not kickstart the compost, but will still decompose either left on the ground or in the compost. From time to time, I cut off and throw old brownish comfrey leaves in the compost, since they don't look nice left in place. Then I put some finished compost around the comfrey.
I would feel more optimistic about a bright future for man if he spent less time proving that he can outwit Nature and more time tasting her sweetness and respecting her seniority. E. B.White
