A little late to the party, but I thought it worth mentioning. Aveeno 24 hour is an excellent heavy lotion, although I prefer lotions that have mostly natural ingredients. Anything made by Watkins is excellent, with all natural ingredients! It's best to find all natural ingredients. Why use man made ingredients for the largest organ of our body, right? You can find those types of lotions and creams at your local organic store. I do agree with the other main ingredients mentioned above, such as, Pure Vitamin E is excellent on broken skin, and scars. Lanolin, Shea Butter, Coconut Oil, Grapeseed Oil, and Olive Oil are excellent, as well. And warm paraffin dips really are so soothing!! Smiling You can go to a manicurist/pedicurist for that. Smiling Smiling

Finally, if you can stand the somewhat medicinal odor, Bag Balm is excellent in healing the skin! Smiling Smiling It was developed for animal udders that get irritated and cracked from milking, but it's also sold in drug stores, at least around here, and you can find it on the bottom shelf. Smiling It's in a square green tin, and if you can find it in a small tin, I suggest to buy that for a sample trial. They used to sell those here, but I can only find the large tin, these days. A little goes a long way. Smiling These days, you can probably find the small tin online. I just haven't checked. The thing about Bag Balm is that it's antibacterial properties heal the broken skin, and it heals more shallow scratches, cuts, and abrasions and irritated skin very nicely, in 24 hours! It's so soothing, and it lasts due to its healing properties that really penetrate to the deeper skin layers! I put it on at night with gloves, and the odor goes away with the first hand washing, or two, in the morning. If I have slightly deeper cracked or broken skin (that's not too deep to need stitches) or a sore, all of which might take a bit longer to heal, I use it as a salve under the bandaid or gauze, until it heals. Hope this helps the newer members! Group hug Group hug

Bag Balm works for me when I've gone from cracked to really sore... most of the time my go-to is "Udderly sMOOth," comes in a holstein black/white patterned jar (Walmart is one source). It's a thick white cream that absorbs easily and is not at all greasy. I put it thickly on my feet, like I'm buttering them, and then pull on socks for the night. (My feet get abused possibly more than my hands, because I'm more likely to go without shoes than without gloves in the garden.)

My best cure is a paraffin wax dip. Removes all those old dead skin cells and makes hands feel so good!

I like Aspercreme in a tube. No odd smell, and it seems to work quickly. Aside from that, I have a cloth tube of pebbles or beans (not sure which as it was a gift, just going by how it feels) that heats up nicely in the M/V and provides good warmth to aching joints.

I was wondering about Udderly Smooth! Perhaps I'll try that too! I went to the drugstore yesterday to get some Bag Balm, and they only had one left. I opened the thing, and someone had swiped their finger in it! Grumbling They ordered a fresh tin for me. Smiling I looked at Udderly Smooth and almost got it...now I wish I had gotten it, or at least looked at the ingredients to be sure they meet my standards of organic, as well as, to be sure there's no gluten! Glare D'Oh! D'Oh!

It takes me forever in the drugstore to check ingredients for gluten! Not only for wheat but also for oat ingredients. I do have Celiac Disease, and I have the dermatitis form, on top of the gut reactions, so I have to watch the personal care items I use, particularly for the entire head, neck and shoulders bc I'll get lesions, but I'm cautious with everything I get. Our organic store does carry those types of gluten free items, but sometimes I get lazy and take advantage of convenience. Ingesting gluten also causes lesions in those areas, but it takes a lot of gluten for an internal gut reaction to come along. I was diagnosed in 2007, after our DD#1 was diagnosed. We were told it's inherited, and had no idea it was in our genes! She doesn't suffer from the dermatitis form though. Not all Celiacs do, and she is very thankful for that.

Anyhow, I digress. I'm going to look at Udderly Smooth. Are the ingredients all organic?

I've never heard of Amlactin. Where can it be found?

Not sure about organic for these, but in keeping with the main thread, I'm another fan of Neutrogena Swiss Formula for day use https://www.walmart.com/ip/Neu... (you can touch the refrigerator, microwave and such without making a greasy mess everywhere). Had to give BagBalm away - couldn't stand the smell. It is predominantly petroleum jelly and lanolin. I prefer Aquaphor (you can find it in the baby aisle) https://www.walmart.com/ip/Aqu.... Similar ingredients without that smell. It is mostly like a Vaseline - I tap each fingertip and thumb - then tap cuticles of my other hand and work it around the cuticles (not the whole hand for this as it is greasy). Allergic to both Polysporin and Neosporin - it's my wound care as well - with dry skin it really helps to keep any scratch or cut moisturized and sealed. I've done the cuticle thing with Vaseline as well.

For non-allergic lotions (skin sensitivity, again don't know about Celiac), Aveeno and Cetaphil are the best. Others may say hypo-allergic but not really be so. Aveeno skin relief in a tub is great for night time rejuvenation https://www.walmart.com/ip/Ave... (their bottle / pump lotions are the same as everyone else as far as hand care). But these are my 2 go to for non-allergic sun screens.

Yeah, hypoallergenic doesn't include gluten free because Celiac Disease is an autoimmune disease vs. an allergy. The body attacks the healthy cells, for me, both in the gut and the skin. Sighing! There are people allergic to wheat, but there's a huge difference. Aveeno has oats in it, but they are fantastic products! I used them before my diagnosis, and I found them wonderful for my hands, but now a days, I would just have to be careful to touch my face before it absorbs into the skin of my hands. Sighing! It does take regular use of topical products and constant ingestion of gluten before the lesions show up, though. It's not instantaneous, but the lesions are very itchy and irritating, so I just have to err on the side of caution and stay away from gluten all together. Smiling Of course, I have to fall in the low percentage of, what would be considered, the allergen world of skin and hair care products, right?! Glare Rolling my eyes. Rolling my eyes.

Bloomin, you might think about experimenting with your own products. Both lotions and oils are surprisingly easy to make, you can do up small batches to see how your skin reacts, have control over all ingredients, and play with essential oils. No weird ingredients, no preservatives, no gluten. There are lots of recipes available on-line, or books by reputable authors who have been doing this for a long time (Rosemary Gladstar is my fav). Much much less expensive as well, some of those fancy lotions can be pretty pricey.

Deb that's a great idea....I did try that long before my diagnosis but perhaps it's time to get back into it again. Smiling There are certified gluten free products at the natural food store that really are comparable in price to the drugstore products, since they've been increasing in price. There is a company online, called Joelle, that makes nothing but organic, certified gluten free products. They're like a mom & pop company, and their prices are fairly comparable to drugstore prices and shipping is free. Smiling I'm getting my makeup from them, but I don't wear makeup but maybe a couple times a month, at best. Just found them about 8 months ago, so I'm still experimenting with face wash and such. Trouble is, I get impatient and lazy and take advantage of the convenience of the drugstore, more often than I should. Rolling my eyes. Rolling my eyes.

I use a mini-crockpot and hand held immersion blender to mix up my lotions, and measure using a large or small spoon (not exactly a precise science). For oils, I just mix the carrier oils by eye directly into a small dispenser (recycled from a commercial product) then add essential oils, then roll it in my hands to mix. It comes together quickly, and I usually make really small amounts so I can tweak the formulas to suit my skin. There are so many carrier oils to try (olive, avocado, jojoba, apricot kernel, on and on...) as well as essential oils for scent and function. Lots of good info on the internet to help you decide what to use. I'm hooked on DIY skin products.

I use plain jojoba oil to clean my face, sometimes I also use coconut oil or castor oil on my hands and jojoba oil on my hair and eyelashes...
