It is new to me and still growing in a pot. Additionally almost all of my irises this year have very short stalks...possibly due to the warm winter and/or the lack of water (although I have tried to keep them well irrigated). I will check the stalks later and get back to you.

I went out and measured it. The tallest leaf is 8 inches and the base of the flower is at 5 inches...but my other SDBs are really tiny...leaves only 3-4" tall so I don't think it is an MDB. There is only the one stalk for now...more may develop later since I was given several rhizomes.

Another one opened this morning. I almost missed it. The clump is beside a clump of daffodils and this little guy opened up in the daffodil foliage.

I pulled a lot of the daffodil foliage off and broke one of the falls on the bloom. It has more bloom stalks coming on.

My iris season is really mixed up. I have bloom stalks on TB's Dazzling Sarah, Buckwheat and IB Bottled Sunshine. They are really early for not being new plants. I wonder if they are trying to tell me that they had better bloom while they have a chance before the weather gets weird?

I figure it has to be the weather too. but it makes me a little worried about what the summer will bring. oh well, what we cannot change we endure and we might as well endure it well if we can.

I have never had TBs that early. In fact we avoid the early blooming ones for a chance of weather damage. & then there is the spring when I could not understand why the flower didn't open on 'American Maid'. I found the stalk was like an iron bar--frozen stiff. There didn't seem to be any real damage to the rest of the plant & it bloomed well the following year.

we are supposed to get cold tonight and tomorrow night here, Lucy. It will slow things down and the frost will nip a lot of flowering shrubs and trees but with the warm up during the day the cold temps should not hang around to do to much damage. Knock on wood.

We had 10 degrees this morning, and a hi of 20 degrees! Good thing the sun was shining.

Snowflakes falling in KY but the irises are growing a little each day.
I started an iris spreadsheet to keep track of what blooms each year but only went back to 2011. I use my pictures to help remember the dates but mostly just record the year. Maybe dates of bloom would be better in trying to figure out how weather affects bloom time. It kept me busy during the snow storms and spurred me to make an iris scrapbook with all of my pictures by years. Smiling

I started keeping bloom dates because one year everything seemed late and I was worried that I would not get many blooms. Some years they are only off a few days but this year it's a jumble. My blooms may occur rapidly and be over quickly.

Suppose to be freezing temps tomorrow night. Then it will warm up again. Not sure when bloom will start this year, but as long as I have kept record the bloom time has been pretty much the same. SDB's start in late April, joined by TB Footloose and Las Vegas which are very early. Bloom through much of May with LA's and JI's coming in mid/late May. Gets pretty warm for all of them by June.

I. pumila should be in April here, but who know when flowers will start. Any type of flowers . Melting has started, but there is still a lot of snow around + the piles from shoveling & snow plows.

Another 10 degree morning, and a mix of snow and rain predicted for tomorrow. Sighing!
