You are way ahead of me, I started allowing three feet per plant, now that space keeps shrinking...but I am hoping for larger clumps. *Blush*

LOL I was just thinking that the exact same thing will happen to me eventually. If I give-in to buying more and more plants, or keeping more and more seedlings, which I think most here will agree is inevitable, I 'll have to shrink the existing clumps or buy more land. Or I suppose I could convert more and more of my lawn into planting beds! http://garden.org/i/s/nodding....

Thought I'd let everyone in on the humble fact that my property, and landscape, is VERY crude. On the plus side, anything I do looks good compared to what was there. On the negative side, it can be embarrassing. Here is my "famous" area where the Royal Purple Smoke Tree and Rocket City daylilies are.

When first planted:

One year later:

So nothing really fancy going on here at all. The daylilies will definitely rule supreme!

Welcome, Dennis.

I recommend that you find out from Michigan daylily growers which cultivars survive in your area. I certainly have had my heartache from plants I lost in the past.

Lawns are over-rated (says the woman who is systematically shrinking hers).

I could be accused of tooting my own horn (I tend to do that occasionally), but here's an easy way to build raised beds over craptacular soil... http://garden.org/ideas/view/f...

I'm in northern Illinois and Pauls daylilies do great for me. Three others whose daylilies excel here are Richard Norris (Ashwood Gardens), Judy Davison and Mike Derrow (Adena Hems). Daylilies were my latest obsession I'm afraid.

My husband has edged the lawn in most of my small garden with paving bricks which are cemented in. He says it's to make it easier to mow but I know it's to stop the lawn shrinking as I have to find more room for daylilies Hilarious!

Very glad to hear that about Pauls daylilies! I'm optimistic they'll do great for me too.

I'm familiar with Norris (and I bought one of his) and Derrow, but not Judy Davison. Thanks for the tip http://garden.org/i/s/smily.gi...

Are you sure they are cemented in? He might just be sayin that. If they are not you might be able to move them out 2 feet without him noticing http://garden.org/i/s/whistlin...

Wow Lisa, I love it! http://garden.org/i/s/hurray.g...
You've definitely got an amazing amount of em crammed in there-- very healthy-looking plants producing a sea of color that must be great to walk along and look at.
I'm curious if you notice any fragrance? I'm setting up a bed with all fragrant daylilies but I've read that most of the time daylily fragrance is subtle.

I for sure have a lot of room. Right now I'm sticking to a more "traditional" landscape of shrubs, grasses with daylilies mixed-in, but I imagine that as time goes by the daylilies will more and more dominate...

Not many have fragrance , some consider this a fault in daylilies.
I do not choose for fragrance but know that diploids close to species tend to have more fragrance. I guess I need to pay more attention to that this year. *Blush*

FYI, just in case you are wondering.....there is a little space between the plants and all are tagged. I just have to divide often. I have been lucky and have had success trading or selling off the extra fans here ( classified and coops) for a fair/ below market price and those funds let me buy new or replace ones Old man winter takes from me. In fact @Foolbloom just tempted me to buy a few from her sale currently posted. Whistling

LOL Lawns are definitely over-rated. Mine has more weeds than grass. Great article on raised beds! I may make some (seedling bed?). Right now I'm doing what I call a half-raised bed where I just berm-up 4-12 inches above grade, depending on the plant and bed. Has been working pretty well so far...

Welcome to ATP Dennis! Sounds like you will have a good start with all the plants you have coming this spring. A true daylily addict always seems to be tempted by more daylilies. Oh the Joy!!!

Some of my favorite hybridizers are Judy Davisson http://www.picturetrail.com/da....
Minnesota's own Karol Emmerich http://www.springwoodgardens.c... and Gary Schaben http://www.frozendaylily.com/i.... Check out Daylilies on Ice for more northern hybridizers http://web.ncf.ca/ah748/ccdc.h... and for hybridizers across the country check out Chatlotte's Daylily Diary http://daylilydiary.com/.

I have to check if I have any of Paul Owen's daylilies in my Flowers program I use to keep track of all my plants. I do have daylilies from many hybridizers across the country not just the northern folks.
If you want to be happy for a lifetime plant a garden!
Faith is the postage stamp on our prayers!

Early Shirley, Mr Butters, Miss Demeanor, Working Overtime, Reddy Freddy, Mama Drama and Dr. Handsome there is more that are grow up. Give them lots room ample water then wait till their third season. Oh my what a show amazing bud counts and instant re-bloom. Almost forgot the beautiful flowers and heathy foliage. Maybe next year? hee hee
