Karen - That is something I never even thought about! Thanks for that info.

Becky, I totally agree with you about the water. I am becoming a firm believer that it s the water that gives me the most beautiful plants. I have heard several growers say that had they to choose between fertilizer or watering, it would be water.

Karen - I agree Daylilies are pretty tough plants, but without water they will struggle and eventually die. And I agree ... after a good rainfall, my plants look amazing!

Wes said:Welcome aboard Dennis, I enjoyed the read.
It's ironic my first job was a big box store nursery spot and a couple years later I "found myself" in lawn and landscape maintenance as a "forever" career move.
The red daylilies he sent pictures of inspired me to search out my own and better. I'm not a big fan of things red, but...those blooms!

Thanks, Wes.

Working for the landscape company I did a lot of lawn and landscape maintenance work-- amazing when I think back how many lawns I have mowed and shrubs I have pruned.

You mention your experience with reds. I'm not a big fan of pink and yet for a variety of reasons some pink daylilies are actually going to be in prime, featured locations in my landscape. Shrug! Strange how that worked out, but the photos of the blooms are fantastic and I'm sure they'll will look nice. Even if I'm not thrilled with the pinks, I think the blooms in my garden will be both for me and for visitors to enjoy so if others are wowed by the pinks then that is a win...

I've also read that water is the most important things for daylilies.

I haven't used Milorganite but will look into it. I tried some blood meal on my shrubs last year and was amazed at their positive response-- better than anything I've tried before. Will be using it again, especially since it also keeps deer and rabbits away (at least for a few weeks).

Last year I bought some orange daylillies, they are coming up nicely now, I planted them all around the bottom circle shape of
a old pedestal bathroom sink, last year it was a bird bath and this year it is going to be a water lily pond, well it is
not sitting perfectly level and my husband said he will move it and pour a slab of cememnt, and I told him no way, I
do not want to disturb my daylillies...he thought we would just tear them out! They are doing well right where they are
and staying put! Anyway, I read and enjoyed your story, and welcome, nice to meet you. Welcome!

Thanks, Linda. Nice to meet you, too! I tip my hat to you.

Seems like orange daylilies are polarizing-- people either love 'em or hate 'em. I love 'em. I have found daylilies can handle being dug-up and replanted quite well but if yours were just planted I support your protectiveness and would definitely let them settle-in undisturbed. I really like your creative sink lily pond idea, especially with the daylilies around it. Would love to see a pic and I hope it works out for you!

Can't believe that I forgot that I also use seaweed fertilizer on my plants! That and alfalfa, and my plants are doing fantastic. Luckily I have a high enough fence so that the deer can't get in. Otherwise, I'd have to use something stinky!

Ironic you mention it but the pink daylilies tend to be crowd pleasers (in my working environment), I've yet to attend an AHS show or anything remotely similar But I know there will be a place for some pink daylilies in my yardscape before it's all over. And it's never going to be "all over" is it? LOL!

"It" never ends...Ain't it great! Big Grin

If I could do indoors what I do outdoors my house would be home. I'm learning though. Need a bigger wallet.

Hi Dennis!
Nice to meet you!
I agree water is important for daylilies
to give them water weekly but not for them to be in
a soggy area..

The other thing I thought would be amusing...and yet frustrating at times
is when the hot weather here in southeast alabama comes and it is 100
out there or with the heat index and humidity and I am dividing daylilys
I have all mine identified individually with metal stakes

and I type out
white weather resistant labels to place on the metal tag area

however I have been known to be so hot from the weather that I have
put the wrong plant back in the hole ...and not know it till the next year
when it blooms again!

Does anyone know who sells the metal stakes reasonable that have the metal
tag area you can put a label like I use? My source is no longer available
and need someone reasonable to purchase some from soon.

I use 10 10 10 granular around my daylilies in March...
coming out from the center of them a few inches..
A couple tablespoons..per plant..watering it slowly in..

Sheri, what the heck are you doing out in 100 degree heat dividing daylilies? Wait till we get that cool weather about the second week in September or early October, that is miserable job turned into a fun thing done then.
I am thinking about getting some better markers also, so I'll let you know if I find any deals on some.
Here is a chance to win some free ones!

Hi everyone!

Haven’t been on ATP for a while because I’ve been workin like crazy on all the new /expanded landscape beds and what an absolutely gigantic chore that turned into! Grumbling Grumbling Grumbling Angry Angry Grumbling Grumbling Grumbling Grumbling

More than I expected, and I expected a lot...

But I got it done! Hurray! Hurray! Hurray! Hurray! Hurray! Hurray! Hurray! Hurray! Hurray! Hurray! Hurray! Hurray! Hurray!

Ended up using 26 yards of planting soil and believe me when I say it took an incredible amount of work. First dig out and wheelbarrow away to top layer of grass weeds.
Then after digging up the clay and chopping it into big pieces, I’d wheelbarrow over and spread a 3-inch layer of planting soil then work it into the clay while chopping the clay up into smaller pieces. Repeat 3-4 times. Blinking

Plus put in over 250’ of edging. Plus the mulch. About killed me.

Here are a couple examples of my accomplishments:

Got it done just in time because Paul Owen informed me that he shipped my order on Tuesday. Didn't see it today so hopefully tomorrow! Drooling Drooling Drooling Drooling Drooling Drooling Drooling

Getting all the new daylilies will make it all worthwhile, for sure! Thumbs up Thumbs up Thumbs up
