Waaay to soon to give up!

Two years ago I dumped some jugs in August. I got random plants growing out of that pile!

I usually don't have good luck winter sowing them Ronnie, but this one didn't want to sprout indoors, so out it went.

I did (finally Sticking tongue out ) get a lot of (indoor) pansy sprouts this year, but of the ones that have sprouted so far, about 80% of them were primed seed purchased from Swallowtail Seeds...and this year I did not follow directions! For years and years I've tried them in darkness, with very little success, and now that I'm using light instead, I'm doing very well. Hurray!
Not sure if the priming process changed the light/dark parameters, but I'm going to go with what worked this year for future sowings as well.

I have seven containers total now with sprouts. We are supposed to get below 30 for three nights in a row. I grouped those containers this morning so I can just cover them at night. The sprouts are two types of Bachelor Buttons, two types of English Daisy, Armeria Ballerina, Statice, and Strawflower.

Some of mine from last year (winter of 2013/14) are just now sprouting, so it's not a bad idea to keep the containers with your most desired plants' seeds until you absolutely can't stand it anymore. Smiling

I had to resow bush beans which froze in the last bitter sudden freeze (while ago now) and they are sprouting again nicely. Zinnias froze too but the resow there is working -- and then one jug acquired a resident slug. Thought I'd left those behind in the PNW but nope. Still a few viable seedlings left in that jug so I picked it and the others up off the ground and put them where slugs won't find them so easily! They've a ways to go yet before I can plant them.

But this row of calendula came from two jugs that were bursting out!

I've got Nigella ready to go in there next, sort of in the center there....

I just closed up all the jugs that were sitting open, because we're forecast to have a severe thunderstorm this afternoon and I hope to avoid battering. Stuff that's planted is going to have to get tough quick though. Whistling

This is how my newly transplanted seedlings spent the night last night. The winds were fierce off the lake, but the baskets stayed on. We didn't end up getting any hail after all, but I felt better knowing they were covered.

Nice! I think our "severe" storm thread is over. It's thundering and raining a bit but nothing such a much and due to end around an hour from now.

Glad of all this rain though, in general. Last year was so dry!

These sunflower and chamomile starts were transplanted from their jugs a while ago; the two jugs here are zinnia starts being protected from slugs.

Thanks! So far so good. Today I would plant but have to fit my schedule to others who are willing to take me erranding (have no car of my own). And I badly need potting soil! So that will happen and a few other errands; I may be able to plant this evening, and tomorrow for sure. Probably good to let the soil rest from the rain anyway.

Wow, so far ahead of me! But we are still getting very very cold nights so I hope I don't lose the sprouts I have.

I thought for sure with the past cold nights we had I would lose the zinnias and sunflowers but they were okay Thumbs up Pretty sure we are in the clear now. I am waiting another week or so for putting any annuals in the ground though.

My sprouts that froze had been enjoying nights in the high 30s and the sudden plunge to below ten (as in single digit temp) is what did them in. It was bitter and mean, that night!

But all is well now. And I did get some planting done after all as schedules changed, but mostly potting up lettuce that I'd left in the jugs. I did do four more of my little border clay pots, these from wintersown chamomile (German this time) and thyme. But no pictures cause by then I was bushed and hongry! Whistling

I only checked about a dozen containers today, but some of my favorites are up. Five penstemons and Lavatera variegata! Hurray! Hopefully I'll be able to check the rest tomorrow...or soon anyway. Sticking tongue out
