TYVM, Philip! Here's a before/after from the back corner.

2 yrs ago:
Thumb of 2016-04-14/purpleinopp/7bc2d1

Now:
I left the fence pole here to hang pots.
Thumb of 2016-04-14/purpleinopp/6ab0f0

The red bricks here were replaced with the bigger white ones. The red bricks are now just sitting there to be out of the way until they go to their final purpose.

Good idea leaving the fence pole there,..pots will be well suited hanging from it Thumbs up gosh you managed to get lots of bricks,..the white look better than the red as dividers and will show off blooms and colors better,..i am sure you will find use for the red bricks Whistling

I was thinking of you during the week,..my Terrarium is in need of a plant or plants,..miniatures of course or something that wont out grow the Terrarium too quick,..i remembered how your Miniatures looked so well,..i can never come across anything suitable Whistling

Yes, the red bricks are going to be used to make a raised planter thing in the front. As soon as I can find some dirt!

Good luck with your terrarium! The only thing I know about tiny humidity divas is that they don't like me! LOL!

Some update shots, no plants have been purchased for the landscape except some seeds. Zinnias & Coreopsis:

These spots were empty until March, except for some spiderwort (Tradescantia ohiensis.) The elephant ears (Colocasia esculenta) had been in my Mom's yard until I was ready to move them here last fall:

IDK. DH works at a place where they make storage sheds & other small buildings & he made it @ work. If you call places like that near where you are, they should be able to give you some prices on a design of your choice.

I decided to use my bricks to make some raised bed things on the side instead of out front. A little path 2 paving bricks wide will be between these, though it's pretty low on my list of paths-that-need-bricks list.
Thumb of 2017-03-06/purpleinopp/1c0b3e

Using ones with cement stuck to them & the broken ones to make a tiny dent in filling them up. Now to find more dirt...!
Thumb of 2017-03-06/purpleinopp/7ace37

The broken bricks were previously helping fill this & a couple other spots until erosion from heavy rains & adding organic matter like leaves & compost raised the surface. It has worked like a charm! I left a few small holes removing them, but will remedy that as the season progresses.

I envy your progress. I know about the difficulty with older homes. Ours is just a few years older. We have not made the progress we'd hoped as we have a couple of tenants. Structural issues and apartment issues come first. However, like you we are committed to removing every square inch of lawn that we can...saving room for animals and access. I joke that I would love to eventually cut the lawn with a weed eater! We are also committed (or should be) scroungers. While we have purchased specific plants but have also free-sourced or deep-clearanced most. Our goals are to produce food not only for us but also wildlife and to try to provide a bit of the aesthetic. We live in an older, heavily urbanized area. We have had two recent near misses on large hosta collections...finding out the owners threw away splits days after they were hauled away. Sigh. Just heard the same about a small greenhouse. Ah well...patience... it isn't like we have a shortage of other work to complete. I would like to get to the point where I feel less like we live in a construction site. Eyes toward the long view!

Anyway, we love the direction you're going and the execution.Well done!!!
Always looking for interesting plants for pollinators and food! Bonus points for highly, and pleasantly scented plants.

TY so much for your kind words of encouragement! We're not getting any younger either and hopefully the effort now will reward us with much less maintenance in the future and, like you wish for your yard too, some edibles for us and our wild visitors. Needing only a weeder sounds awesome! Best luck to your goals!

I don't have edibles, but I can essentially take care of the front with a weeder. Do have a battery-operated mower to catch the wider areas, but I could do it with a weeder. Smiling

My front wants to look like that when it outgrows its' grass phase! I went to dig up more grass yesterday but the ground is as hard as a rock from being so dry. Will try again if it ever rains again.

I'm not sure I like the 2nd brick thing, and it's crooked, but the first one has some plants. I keep adding more, and this summer, it's name is Cordyline Corners. (Must come back inside for winter.)

Plucked from others' trash piles to decorate front porch. Fits right in, in front of 115 year old house. Wobbly old ladder and bamboo chair with chew marks on a back leg.

Making this area bigger, leaving only a path of mowed area (which eventually turns into a real path, in my dreams.) I did this a couple weeks ago &, as I suspected, a serious crop of mimosa (Albizia julibrissin) sprouts has shown up. The mama tree has been cut down, and I probably won't put much here but try to cover the surface with organic matter after a few weeks of seeing what sprouts & pulling all of it.
