The Etched Eyes in your photo is a seedling, not the named and registered cultivar? I don't think you sent me any Suddenly Blue seeds. "Through the Looking Glass x ?" was marked on the baggie.

I just figured out that "Laughing Clown x Zanti Misfit" will not cross with "Through the Looking Glass x ?" .... seems the first seedling is a dip and the second one is a tet. LOL! No seed pod from that 2-way cross! LOL!

I do have 2 seed pods forming on Laura Mast x Dragonfly Dawn. I think the blooms are crossed with themselves. (Not the double blooming daylily cross though.) But that is neat that it is fertile enough to take pollen late in the day! I have to wait until I get home from work at 4 pm to hand-pollinate the blooms as the pollen is not even ready early in the morning before I go to work. It looks like 1 seed pod (probably also self crossed) on "Laughing Clown x Instant Graffiti". Two more blooms on that one today that I crossed with themselves. I should have crossed it with the "Laughing Clown x Zanti Misfit" pollen. Oh well. Now I know. There are still plenty of buds left to bloom on all those plants.

Laughing Clown x Instant Graffiti had 2 new blooms today:

Muata - Thank you!

New first bloom on another sibling seedling. This one is a sibling to "Laughing Clown x Zanti Misfit". It is planted right next to it's sibling (which I showed in an earlier post). It is small. Probably planted to too close to it's sibling and others around it. I have seedlings crammed into raised beds when they are smaller plants, but a number of them grow quite robust and out-perform the others in the same bed, becoming much larger than the other seedlings around them. (Which is probably a very good characteristic for a daylily!)

I really like this one because of the color and the distinct pattern. The bloom is above the fan, but being so small compared to it's sibling means that I probably need to move it to give it more root space. I think this one would do much better being moved this year and will show a more robust performance next year. (Or possibly if it reblooms this year?)

The first scape stats and first bloom stats: 12" scape, 6" bloom, 5 buds. This bloom really caught my eye at first notice!

Thumb of 2015-04-12/beckygardener/9cab14

Side view showing other buds and also a proliferation.

Thumb of 2015-04-12/beckygardener/fb042e

Prolifs on the sides of the scapes are something that I am noticing on all the UFO and spider seedling's very first scapes. Most also have lots of buds and seem to be quite fertile. When I hand-pollinate with another dip or itself, they seem to produce seed pods readily.

Dips produce more seeds than tets, right?

I don't know if you can see the comparison of size between this plant (#2) and it's sibling (#1) right next to it:

Thumb of 2015-04-12/beckygardener/707a60

This is a second bloom of #1 sibling today. I love the color of this one! I like how the back of the tips of the curls have the matching yellow color of it's throat.:

Thumb of 2015-04-12/beckygardener/fa70d9

Additional blooms of other seedlings:

Seedling #1 of "Through the Looking Glass x unknown". So far, the blooms have been very consistent. I think this is one of the last blooms on that seedling first scape.

Thumb of 2015-04-12/beckygardener/f7fc1a

Two more blooms on Laughing Clown x Instant Graffiti seedling #1. Seedling #2 right next to it looks like it will have it's first bloom tomorrow. It will be interesting to see what the flower looks like on that one.

Thumb of 2015-04-12/beckygardener/f1d736

The ridiculous thing about this plant is that it has a prolif on it's scape that also has a single bud on it! I don't know how common that is to have a prolif bloom on a first scape? This plant actually has TWO prolifs on it's scape.

Thumb of 2015-04-12/beckygardener/fb5b3b

What a crazy plant this one is! Rolling my eyes. Hilarious! Hilarious! Hilarious! Thumbs up

Jon - Wow! You have accumulated quite a few daylilies. How exciting for you! I can't wait to see some of your blooms. Especially blooms of the seedlings. Your garden beds look awesome!!! It won't be long before most all of them should be blooming. Such a thrill come Spring/Summer for daylily growers! Big Grin

Yes, I think I can get a frontal photo if it. I meant to post my post in the April blooms, not the seedlings thread.

Jon - LOL! All these bloom threads get confusing! No worry! I love seeing your beds and I know you may have seedlings growing in those beds, too. Did your Dragonfly Dawn x Dragonfly Dawn seedling survive or did the Winter do it in?

Excellent! I have a fondness for Dragonfly Dawn. I had one of my seedlings (from the same batch of seeds I shared with you) bloom last year. I have 1 more seedling in that same bed that has yet to bloom (hopefully this year). AND I sowed the last 2 seeds and transplanted those seedlings this past Fall into a new bed. Both of those have sent up scapes recently. The reason I am interested in that particular cultivar and it's children is because of the genetic traits it often passes on to it's off-spring. It can pass on some nice patterns and colors. I know you may be more interested in the UFOs and Spiders for hybridizing, but if you want to add a pattern to them .... consider crossing some with your DD seedling.

I only have two spiders that I am going to cross with toothy varieties. I am also going to get Webster's pink wonder from @lilydaydreamer that I will be using to cross with more toothy varieties. I got Wise wiskers from Tink which I will be using as one I'd my toothy varieties.

Jon - So glad that your DD x DD survived. It looks great! I am very interested in what kind of bloom it produces. I hope you will post a photo of it when it does bloom. Thumbs up

DD has awesome genes, IMHO. My newest 2 seedlings of the same cross are also sending up their first scapes. Apparently THIS is the time it blooms every year. Odd that my other seedling that bloomed a year ago for the first time didn't bloom until summer. And it is not sending up scapes yet either. Must be picking up some characteristics further back in it's genetic family. You just never know what you will get!

I am sure you are going to be seeing more and more scapes now that Spring has arrived. The scapes kind of blend in with the foliage and then all of a sudden you see them sticking up! Always a nice surprise!

Webster's pink wonder and Wise Whiskers are two really beautiful plants! I think you are going to have a lot of fun hybridizing those two! I look forward to your bloom photos! Thumbs up

I look forward to seeing them all, Jon!

Today 3 more seedlings blooming for the first time.

First up is an unknown parentage. Not real impressed with this bloom and scape because it is low down near the foliage. A nice pink color though. Scape is 11", bloom is 5", and it has 6 buds on it. Seedling is over 2 years old.

Next is a sibling of "Laughing Clown x Instant Graffiti" blooming for the first time. It is right next to it's sibling. Scape is 23", bloom is 6", and there are 13 buds on three branches.
Morning (I didn't get an afternoon photo):

Last is Dragonfly Dawn x Dragonfly Dawn first bloom. Scape is 21". Bloom is 6". Only 4 buds on this first scape.
Morning:

Side view (you can only see one other bud from this side of the scape, but there are actually 3 more buds):

Afternoon (it really looked quite different and interesting in the afternoon):

That's my newest seedling blooms for the day! I see a few scapes coming up on some more of my seedlings. It's going to be a glorious season if this start is any indication!
