Of course, there is nothing like the feeling of finding a cats tail when reaching under a hosta while weeding. Scares the devil out of one. Doesn't do much for the cat either. Big Grin

It's not the cat tails that worry me. It's the snakes! I sure don't want to feel under a plant and find one of THOSE. Rolling my eyes.

Yeah, being down south and all, it wouldn't be a fun experience to come accross a snake. But we really don't have poisonous ones where I'm at. I've been known to be out weeding and sit back on a garter snake and not totally freak out. I just try to explain to the little guy that he really shouldn't startle someone with a sharpe hoe in their hand. Rolling on the floor laughing

Tn has a lot of poisonous ones if what I read is correct! Seems like every venemous snake has chosen to come live around here. Happily I haven't yet seen one not even out in my field.

Ya know, It's probably not a good idea for anyone to startle someone with a sharpe hoe in their hand, be you a snake or otherwise... LOL Blinking Rolling on the floor laughing

Can't wait to have my hoe down here. I remembered to bring my shovel and my fork but forgot the hoe. That should tell you how I feel about weeding! *Blush*

Wow, if you get bored you can come to Iowa and we'll put you to work in our Hosta beds weeding. Smiling The major danger I have in weeding in my hosta beds is that an occasional black walnut tries to bean me.

Actually, Black Walnut trees are ideal for growing hosta under. They have a tap root so there isn't very many surface roots to compete with the hostas. BW's get a bad rap by people for things not being able to grow under them, but I've never really had a problem. Mostly you can't grow tomatoes or things in the tomato family under them. I grow hosta, lily, daylily, peony, clematis, tulips, poppies, ligularia, brunaria, pulmunaria and lord knows tons of things I've forgot about. LOL Thumbs up

azaleas and rhodies don't do well under them either. My problem with the walnuts was the physical damage they did when they dropped on my plants.
