I have tried many different varieties, mostly soft necks, over the years. One year I tried 6 varieties and a close neighbor tried 6 others. We figured out of 12 we should at least get one or two but we didn't get any worth bothering with. I wonder if our fluctuating temperatures might have a negative effect on it? One week it will be 50 and the next it might be 75 or 85 all winter long. In the past we have occasionally gone swimming in January then we'll have frost the next day. You never know around here. Even though I used ProMix in the raised beds, there is so much salt spray around here that everything gets salty after a while. My friends who live just a few miles inland have no trouble with their garlic.

So garlic is just not my crop. I can grow outstanding tangerines though. LOL

LOL, Alice -- maybe we can trade garlic for tangerines; that's something that I KNOW won't grow in the Michigan UP !! Hilarious!

Thanks for the suggestion, Weedwhacker. "Music" is one of the varieties I grow every year. I've also grown Chesnok red, Northern White, Georgian Crystal and a few other varieties. Music is always one of my better producers, as is the Georgian Crystal.

I'm always looking to try something new, and am intrigued by some of "drdawgs" offerings.

The pricing per pound (that's the minimum I sell, one pound) is $21 for hardneck, $24 for softneck, and $29 for Creole. I won't invoice anyone until I know I can fill their order. ATP subscribers will get a discount off those prices, from $1.50 to $3.00 depending on variety. Shipping a pound of garlic (two pound rate box though) would be approximately $6.95 to Graysville. Invoicing won't begin until I harvest the first of my garlic, the hardneck, and that should be the second or third week of May. I won't dig the softneck or Creole until a couple of weeks after the hardneck. Keep in mind that I don't ship anything until at least two weeks after harvest. I will cure all the garlic for two weeks after harvest.

I now have several of the hardneck varieties curing in a greenhouse and am harvesting other varieties as they mature. I should have everything dug up and curing by the end of May.

I don't know the answer to that, Pam. I had a friend here in Starkville that bought 15 lbs. last summer and he decided that he wanted to grow garlic. He used only Earth Boxes. I think he treated those two boxes like you would a tub/pot, and just fertilized and watered like usual. He said he had none of the covers than come with those boxes and didn't remember how he was supposed to use them. I have seen pictures of his garlic (he depends on me to tell him whether it all looks good and when to harvest Sighing! ) and it all looks just fine to me. I planted late, late, late and used the boxes as directed. I plan on using these three again this fall but I am going to simply treat them like an ordinary planting tub, no cover, no central mound of fertilizer, and will water it/let rain fall on it like I would my garden. I am quite sure that will work as well as the large pots I use now.

Excellent...that is how I use mine anyway, but I do keep water in them. Im hoping by the time the roots get long enough to get in the water, the bulb is happy up above.

I don't really know how deep those roots go. When I dig mine up, it appears that the roots are no more than 6-10". When my friend digs his up, perhaps he can tell me whether any of the roots actually reached the water reservoir.

I have some Earth boxes -- good idea; that's where I'll plant the garlic instead of in my raised veggie bed. I just planted a lot of different marigold seeds in that bed; and then later I'll turn them under - using them as a cover crop. Should help with the nematodes. - if I have any in there. Don't want to take chances.
I'm looking forward to getting some from you later in the year.

It won't be much "later", Elfie. I am digging up a variety about every 2-3 days now, and have five varieties hanging in the greenhouse to cure. I will begin invoicing next week and will ship some out next week. Most of it won't be ready to ship until the weeks of June 8 and 15.

My experiment was a failure. My Earth Boxes, March planting only produced tiny bulbs and large cloves. It was not worth the effort. My friend who planted his garlic in the Earth Box in the fall says all his cloves formed tiny bulbs. I think the problem is that the Earth Box is designed to keep the potting soil moist at all times and that's not what garlic needs. Even though the Earth Box folks says the boxes will grow garlic well, I don't think they know what they are talking about. For me at least, I think the only way to make the boxes garlic-friendly is by drilling drainage holes in the bottom of the box. Of course that means the water reservoir won't hold water, and that pretty well defeats the very purpose of using the Earth Box. By drilling the holes, I would simply be creating a planting tub. I think the Earth Box would do a good job for flowering plants and some vegetables like tomatoes and melons (and probably many other). I will growing something in the three I have but will have to decide whether to use them as-is or as tubs when fall comes. They should/will still do a good job growing, whether they drain or don't drain. The box will simply need more frequent watering if I make it/them drain.

I have enough of the garlic harvested (and have a good feeling of what additional there is to harvest) to begin the process of invoicing all of you who asked for garlic. I can only accept PayPal, check, or cash. PayPal is the easiest (though eBay will get a cut), so to use PayPal, I will need your PayPal account name (probably your email address). Give me that information via T-Mail to keep it private or reply to my email IF I contact you that way.

If anyone else wants garlic, now is the time to contact me via T-Mail. The hardneck will be $19.50, the softneck $22.00, and the Creole $26.00, plus shipping. I will begin to ship garlic next week but most will be shipped in a couple of weeks. I want to "cure" the garlic for two weeks before shipping it.
