My dad gave me this shrub from his yard more than 20 years ago. He always called it a fire thorn although it's no pyracantha. It's always bloomed in mid to late April. For some reason I had thought maybe Indian hawthorn but it doesn't fit any online pics. Could this be a Japanese quince? Any help is appreciated.

Mine for comparison.

Thanks, all! You've made me happy. Have always wanted a quince but I've only seen short little things. Dad never knew the botanical names or even some common names of all the stuff he grew. He passed in late October so this is his final gift to me. Poor thing has been growing in clay for the past 20+ years. I'll have to give it some TLC. Would there be a variety or cultivar name for this one?

Show us the whole thing but I'm thinkin it might just need a trim. Mine grows in clay, too. Doesn't seem to bother it.

likes full sun in the shade of a few flowers, can withstand clay soil and is permeable, You can refine as needed, blooms on old wood
the fruit is very good combined into preserves, is strongly aromatic

Bamira - that's a lot of photos! Thanks for posting that link.
Have always been hesitant to prune it before it blooms but will do a major pruning when the flowers are gone. I've never noticed any fruits on it. Maybe it's that TLC thing I need to do. I know my dad had multiple plants so it must have fruited at some point for him. It does get sun the first half of the day.
Thanks all.

Mine doesn't fruit. Yes, shape it up after the bloom is done. Thumbs up
