I'm looking at a full-flush season, which I expect to be done by next week. Can't believe how fast this has come and gone. So frustrating when we wait for a year to see it. I've got a couple that are just now putting up bloom stalks -- slows things down a little bit.................
Thoughts become things -- choose the good ones. (www.tut.com)
Lori, how does this compare to your Alta California? The fellow I got it from doesn't think it is. He says the veining is redder, but I'm wondering if it's a climactic or cultural thing.. (Arlyn & anyone else feel free to pipe up on this)
The surest sign that intelligent life exists elsewhere in the universe is that it has never tried to contact us.
Sherry, I'm seeing a dramatic example of how soil and location can effect colors. I moved some Amas to the base of this silver maple where almost nothing else will grow, and forgot and left one rhizome sitting in the gravel next to the bed, where it rooted and is blooming happily. The one in mostly gravel is blooming normally, but those behind it in the bed are much paler in color.
In this first photo, you can see both, next just the lighter blooms.

Neal, I want to trade you out of a piece of your Honorabile, If I can ! If it 'usually" has un-venerated falls....it *may* be the "real deal", but, at any rate, I like to gather all the versions I can, just for comparison. Be thinking of what you may "need' for your garden
Certainly Arlyn, I'd be happy to. I'd love some of your orchid colored noid- I find it so charming and lovely. This is the first time Honorabile has varied from the norm; I'm curious if the other buds will open normally. Here is a pic from last year looking like it normally does.

Sherry, I would say it is very possible it is. Does it have at least slight PBF? Mine is very light this year last year it was more pronounced. Here are some different shots of different blooms. All one plant.
If I were to look at these pics individually I would probably say they were not the same due to color. However, knowing that they are the same kinda sways your perception of things. I grow mine in less than full sun on the north side of the house, horrible soil, in a bed full of lava rock...bad conditions! Each bloom seems to have it's own characteristics, some have more blotches, some none at all, some have fairly dark falls, some are pretty clear with the brown/maroon veining....you figure it out.
Joseph's Coat Katkamier is so cool! Lavandulacea looks to have horns in that photo, or is that what is called flounces? Love it, whatever it is. Fantastic Blue is indeed fantastic, and Spanish Coins is such a rich color. All are awesome!

Tom, you inspired me to run outside and give Loreley a sniff! Since its short, I hadn't noticed the fragrance. You're right, such a clean, almost lemony fragrance.

Neal, I hate to be the bearer of bad news but if you read the description of Gypsy Queen I believe that you have the "imposter". While it is beautiful and I would love to have it growing here, I do not believe that it is the "real" Gypsy Queen.
This is what I believe is the real deal.
