My 'War Paint' really caught my eye today! Just a couple of days ago the leaves hadn't unfurled yet, but today it sent me running for the camera!
Thumb of 2015-05-09/alwaysbehindMN/93387b
I've had it for 10 years and it has always had a few beautiful leaves, but never increased much in size. But this year I think it might take "the leap" that it should have had the 3rd year! With its piecrust edges it stays very beautiful even after it turns green! Rose, has your plant been slow also?

Linda - regarding your "War paint" hosta: try using organic liquid fish fertilizer on your hostas. if you're interested in them growing faster and bigger that is... we have 70 hostas in our yard and we use it in diluted form on all of them. dilute it down to roughtly one quarter of the recommendations then simply water as you normally would. especially in the early growth stages. works wonders! growth is accelerated, volume is increased, and the colors are much more vivid. also seems to make new plants produce more shoots than you'd think they would. we have several 3-4 year plants that look like 6-7 year plants.

Linda,

Sorry I forgot to check on this thread...I had mine for 3 years and it didn't do much. Then I moved it, and it must like where it's at now! It's been in this spot now for several years and has grown to be a large plant. I divided it last year and it's looking really nice again this year. I just use 10 10 10 fertilizer in the spring and give it plenty of water throughout the growing season.

I had to split mine a few years ago. I was getting some solid eyes in it. So far it seems to be doing okay. Just one of many that I have to keep an eye on.

The only hosta I own right now is blue mouse ears (a friend just gave it to me last week), but I love looking at all of the pictures of your hostas! How beautiful! I intend to add a few more hostas to my collection over time, but I haven't had the time to figure out which ones I want yet. Your pictures are giving me great ideas, though!
