Hi Bill, I'd be honored for you to use my photo at your website! I'm not sure how you can get the photo from ATP to your website so I sent it to you as an attachment in an e-mail too; let me know if you got it. I used the e-mail address [email protected] ... hope that's the correct address.

I was about to decide that my planted-last-year Cals hadn't made it, which was confounding because winter was so mild that I've got survivor Begonias, Kalanchoes, other stuff that's not generally hardy here. But this week, they're coming up, finally... which is confounding because winter was so mild. Or is it just normal? I have not had them for enough years to gauge their range of normal emergence timing. Bananas have been up for almost 2 months. What do you think?

Mine were late coming up, too Tiffany. Maybe because the cold weather came late in December, what there was of it? We've had fits and starts of cold nights even into April this year. (we slept with windows open just over a week ago, amazing for May) One cold night stops or sets them back a little bit, I think. So they've been starting and stopping for the last month, possibly.

They're at least a month later than last year, but last year it warmed up sort of early.

Wish we could ask the plants . . . Sighing! "Where you been, guys??"

MIne is barely poking thru the soil as well. I dug the soil a week ago just to see if they are okay, saw some growth and left them be, then I saw two poking when we got two days of mid 90's. But we are back to late winter-like temps..oh well..just got to wait some more.

We just moved and my Caladium's in containers are popping up and I've also noticed that with all the rain this past week, Caladium's around the yard are starting to show their pretty faces too.

Happy to see them happily growing already on your side Lin! Yeah, have seen them grow like grass in Manila..high heat, high humidity, happy caladiums, and if it rains, does not matter at all..all the more they will grow like weeds.

I love Caladiums and add to my collection each year. I had a problem with the squirrels digging them up this past spring after I planted them, boy did that make me mad. lost some nice bulbs. Sometimes I have one come up in a place where I know I didn't plant it, so must have been relocated by a squirrel.

I find they do much better in pots than directly in the sandy FL ground. I don't necessarily fertilize but some are mixed in with plants that do get fertilizer, like my geranium and plumeria, they do seem to perform the same to me either way.

That last picture is a gorgeous mixture of leaf colors and shapes, Sherri. Nice growing!

I got a new bag of Florida Beauty from Caladiums4Less this spring and haven't planted them yet. Waiting a little bit so they will last into the fall in the one area I have in mind for them. This is my current favorite, White Wings:

I do put mine in ground for the most part, but they're in the leafy loam under my big oak trees, so lots of good 'stuff' in the soil - I have no lawn and don't rake up my oak leaves, just blow them off the pathways into the flower beds as mulch. I usually add some alfalfa pellets to the soil around where my Caladiums are but that's about the extent of the fertilizer I give them.

Sherri, WOW what a beautiful show you have going on at your place! I'm really starting to like Fancy-leaf Caladium (Caladium 'Florida Beauty') and Fancy-leaf Caladium (Caladium 'Fire Chief') and will add those names to my want/must purchase list! I used to have Red Flash too but haven't seen it in awhile so will add that to my list as well. I'd never even heard of Fancy-leaf Caladium (Caladium 'Frog in a Blender') and I sure do like the looks of those pretty leaves ... so yet, another for the want list! Smiling I too love that last photo you posted, really pretty!!

Elaine, nice 'White Wing', I have that one growing in a hanging basket. As I've cleared out some of the invasive Mexican Petunia (Ruellia simplex) from around a large oak tree here at our new house, I've found a few more Caladiums sprouting and when I was cutting back some saw palmettos at the perimeter of our property I found a couple more colorful leaf types that I'm not sure of the identification of ... I'll have to take pic's and see if someone can give me a name. I'm going to dig them up and transplant them because of the weedy area they are growing in.

And, these are the ones I found when clearing weeds beneath some oak trees on the property; I have no idea who they might be:

Ooo, very nice Lin. The pinkish one with the dark veins is a Thai caladium that they sold at Lowe's some years ago. I still have one and it just puts up a few leaves every year. So pretty. I'd pot that one up if I were you.

Elaine, I figured it was one of the Thai varieties. I managed to get one little one up quite easily from an area with a lot of leaves but there's a bigger clump at the base of an oak tree (entwined with oak roots I think) and I couldn't budge it with my hand shovel ... I'm planning on getting out there tomorrow with my regular shovel to try to get it out!

This is another Thai caladium I got at the same time as the pinkish one (which has not popped up yet, uh oh) and Lari Ann thought it might be called 'Black Thai' which of course is such a cool name. I like the little stained glass window effects in the dark leaves on this one.
