Hello everyone. I have a rose that has been in my family for 3 or 4 generations.
All I know about it is this:

It blooms once in early May just before Mother's Day in my zone 6
It blooms on old canes
The fragrance is very light to medium depending on weather conditions
My great or great great grandparents brought the original rose bush over from Germany and it has been passed on through the following generations
The one I have is from one that is 61 or 62 years old. It was rooted from one my grandmother had.

Any help would be appreciated. I am trying to find out through the older members of my Mom's family but might not learn anything other than which part of Germany they came from and when they came to America.

It's so pretty, Margaret. I hope someone can idenfity it. It might help if you can provide us with the size of the bush and the size of the blooms.

It can easily grow up to 6 feet. Blooms are usually 2 to 3 inches across. I had a close up of the bloom but can't find that photo to save my life right now.

The advanced search option on helpmefind.com is so infuriating at times. I searched for a red once-bloomer with double or full blooms of medium height from before 1940 and it provided me with a list consisting mostly of ramblers, 15-25 feet tall, and some are pink blends with single or semi-double blooms. What???? That was no help at all.

Well you are at least knowledgeable about where to even start looking which is more than I do.

Margaret, I tried an advanced search in our Cubits rose database and came up Flammentanz as a possibility. It's a red once-bloomer that's classified as a tall shrub or short climber and it was bred in Germany before 1952, but I don't know how long before.

I haven't finished filling in all of the details in the Cubits database, but I should have many more options after I've done that. I'm proud to say that the search engine of our database works better than the HMF search. No pink roses in the results.

I just love Dave's search engine in the database It makes it so easy for me to find what I'm looking for.

It looks similar but the leaves are much larger I'll get a picture of the leaves tomorrow. I think we may have to wait until I find out when my grandparents came over here before we can pinpoint which one it may be. I'll give my sister a call tomorrow as well if an email to her doesn't get an answer.
