Growing in the Botanical garden of Rio de Janeiro, unlabeled! Rolling my eyes.
I took one of the fruits, the size of a big hard peach, to my lodgings as I was curious whether it is edible..
The fruit has a strong scent, I found it pleasant, but others not.. Rolling my eyes.
So I tried to eat it, the taste is nice but very dry and fiberish, so I don't think popular as a fruit.

I want to say Ficus but I can't really tell. I don't know the fruit that well.

Hmmm.... The general shape of the fruit, calyx, and seeds looks like Persimmon (Diospyros.) However, I'm not finding an exact species match so far.

I knew Ficus couldn't be right but I had to throw it out there. Interesting trunk and bark.

I googled Diospyros and came up with:
Diospyros discolor, (syn: Diospyros blancoi), I think that's the one! Hurray! Its popular name 'Velvet Apple' is very appropriate!

Thank you Danita!
