Maybe not possible but thought I would try. Got this from a plant trade, via a neighbor. Note on the plant said it "gets tall" and that it had survived four winters outside (definite plus!)

These may not be the best pictures but I can try again if it helps:

I've repotted it since I got it (just the other day in fact as that note also said it was still seting roots so I gave it about a month) and eventually want to put it in the ground.

It's just a guess, but when I saw it I thought Autumn Joy or Autumn Fire. Sticking tongue out

Thanks, JC, yes it looks like one of those, from the foliage pictures. Close enough for me. I look forward to seeing blooms.

You should be able to tell for sure once it blooms. Nice plant.

It could be any number of hardy stonecrop variety, the 2 listed above are quite common, so there's a good chance it could be one of those, I'm not so sure a bloom will help much, they almost all look the same to me...
I doubt you'll rot it off, if you do just cut it back and reroot it... These are fairly indestructible, even a lawnmower is no match for em! They just spread more!
I just had to cut all mine down as they are choking out their neighbors...
I planted as many as I could be tossed a bunch... All you gotta do is stick a cutting in the ground and it's as good as established!
Please tree mail me for trades, I'm ALWAYS actively looking for more new plants, and love to trade!

Thanks, Swayback, right now it's doing fine. It's in a pot and will eventually go in the ground, somewhere. I'm at the stage in this garden where I want things to spread! Thumbs up

Here's the ones I chopped off, it's been like a week and new growth is already showing.

I think you can see how they were crowding out the red hot pokers..

These last 2 pics are one that I tossed down a few years ago... Haven't had the heart to kill it, but no place to put it... It seems fine even tho it's sideways, and growing from a wad of clay smaller than a baseball

Aw, haha that's funny! I do the same kind of thing, refuse to throw out plants that look like they want to live! I have a pile by the compost where I have tossed some things with roots and the things are growing, some of them, I figure if they'll grow there, fine! Green Grin!

I have Autumn Joy, Brilliant, Neon and Stardust and they all look identical. Stardust blooms white, all the rest are pink. They all get to be the size of shrubs in 3 years. I have about 30 divisions to put in the neighborhood plant sale this weekend. (I'm not complaining at all since they are wonderful plants.)

You wouldn't believe all the things growing in our woods besides what's suppose to be there. All the gardens are backed up to woods here and I am constantly throwing pieces of plants into the woods. Many iris, daylilies, sedum, etc grow better in the woods than they did in the gardens, lol. I dig tons of nice plants from the woods for people who come to visit!!

I raised Iris at our home of 35 years and had some 200 varieties which I brought when we moved up here. I was also looking for older varieties and had a letter published in Birds and Blooms a year after we moved up here asking if anyone had some to sell it share. In the mean time, I decided to sell all the Iris and start raising daylilies.

That letter was published in late fall, and the packages of Iris started arriving like you wouldn't believe. We decided to stack the boxes along the garage wall and there must have been 50 of them. I was just going to give them away since I no longer wanted to deal with Iris because this soil harbored the dreaded Iris Borer. Hubby decided to follow the woods and tossed them in at random., and we now have lots of pretty flowers in the woods each spring.
For years after, we received Iris from people who got the magazines at garage sales and responded to the letter. Pretty cool!!

What an amazing story. Did you write another letter to Birds and Blooms telling what happened?

I did write the magazine and they published that letter also. I also ended up with two lifelong pen pals from the letters. One in Alaska and one in S. Carolina.
