That's a great looking fern. Does it get as tall as the sites say?

I've been moving some of the painted ferns from full shade to part/bright shade and the colors really pop!

It's in a container so I'm sure it will not get to full height. Some beautiful ferns, ghost and all the painted ferns.

Evan,

I have grown this plant in my full shade garden for several years. It has never come CLOSE to 36" tall. I updated the ATP plant file to indicate 12-24" tall and wide, but really, I think mine never gets much taller/wider than 18". It is sited on the north side of my house which gets SOME additional water during really hot dry spells, and is in friable, humusy soil.
He who can laugh at himself will never cease to be amused....

That's good to know. I picked one up but will need to plan on a new spot.

I really enjoy this fern, so eye catching. This specimen has thrived in a full, high shade setting.

I'm having a problem with mine....planted 3 about a month ago and they're suffering a lot of what appears to be a burn. Thought maybe it was due to adding too much osmocote fertilizer, but then realized I went far too long without watering. But the area is heavily shaded, and i thought it had plenty of wet soil. Now, all 3 look like they're going to come back with a little bit of healthy growth (maybe one leaf without burn) coming from the middle of the plant. Another concern is that I planted them in a bed of well established ivy ground cover, but that doesn't seem to be interfering at the moment (no new ivy growth choking out the ferns or anything). Just wondered if ivy was a bad companion plant for ferns in general.
Oh by the way, I also have 3 ostrich ferns planted in the same bed, and 2 of them are even worse off than the others. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome! It's my understanding that ferns shouldn't be fertilized as it can be damaging to them. They do like to be well watered. I don't have experience of growing ivy with ferns, but doubt it is an issue, especially with Ostrich ferns. They are pretty tough and can grow up through most anything. I would suggest to keep your ferns moist and they will likely recover. Good luck!

Thanks Debbie. I always seem to get great advice from Canada, so I'm hopeful. Smiling
