I think Ipomopsis rubra also. Mine started blooming last week. A favorite of mine.

Thank you Deebie! That is surely it. These are in an area where I sowed seeds of wildflowers, some seeds I bought & some sent to me by ATP angels.

Donald, I see you've posted photos of it growing on the roadside. It looks like full sun. So I'm wondering if these will do well for me out in the areas where there is zero shade ever! And it can be VERY dry out there. What do you think? The ones in the photos happen to be in an area that gets a good bit of shade & holds a bit more moisture. If it is your opinion they will do for me in the dreadful conditions then I will get some more seed & sow them in those areas.

They sell this for rangeland (among other uses) and that picture on the right sure looks like full sun to me!

@flaflwrgrl The photo I posted earlier was taken today. These grow in full Texas sun in an area with very shallow, very lean soil on a slope over a limestone outcropping which got fenced into the yard because I couldn't get posts set in it and the posts ended up at the bottom of the slope. Lots of sun, survives drought in this location. There are fewer plants now than when I first spread the seeds I collected from the roadside stand in the photo you referenced. The drought takes it toll on plants. They are classified, and are essentially, biennials so it's not until the second year you get a good show after first planting them. A few bloom sooner and after they are established and continually reseeding the biennial effect is not noticeable. I see them growing around in the county on the edge of the road, on railway right of ways, in wooded areas with lots of shade. Where I never see them grow is any place that has animal traffic. Either cattle and horses, sheep and goats eat them or the tall spire of the foliage just gets knocked down. They have spread to some unlikely places in my yard including right next to the fence line, but I have yet to see a single plant on the pasture side of the fence. Many of the current crop of plants have migrated and are growing happily under the shade of oak trees. They don't look any different than those in full sun. I hope I'm organized enough and remember to collect some seeds this year. I want to reseed a couple of spots where they have migrated elsewhere.

And thank you Donald for your most informative run down on the plants. I had always hesitated buying any volume of this seed b/c I was doubtful they would survive the conditions you describe. I'm sure you know what I'm talking about as we have much the same conditions and so often I have been disappointed to find things don't live up to their touted reputation. With age comes wisdom (or hopefully so ) and in this at least I have learned to be skeptical unless I can ask someone who *really* knows. So now I will be delighted to sow seed willy nilly! This is great news as the height of the bloom stalk will stand tall above the less desirable growth out there in my wild areas.

The ones I have that I took the photos of are indeed up under the oaks but I also see some as yet not blooming that are farther out in the sun & a drier area. This is the second year for those seeds. I do recall seeing the first year ferny rosette last year. Thank goodness I did not pull them up as the bad kind of weeds. There is not much I pull up anyway with the exception of Virginia Creeper & Smilax.
