Stumbled upon a nice ripe seed head on a big alocasia odora(or similar, I still can't tell odora from mac.) in a greenhouse around here.
They have several blooming size alocasia, but I guess it most likely just crossed with another odora.

I asked for it and they said sure!
I ended up with about 60 good seeds from it, popped em, peeled em, washed em good to get all the orange off of em. It prevents them from germinating, it can be really hard to get off once you get all slimy!

I dried them overnight and planted them yesterday.
I'll probably just end up damping them off, or the survivors will be the same as mom...
But it's the first time I've been able to play with EE seeds at a time of the year that it makes sense.

I just need to start planting more EE in pots instead of the ground, there's just no chance of successful crosses with em planted in ground this far north, not enough time.

I'm excited either way, so much potential in each little seed!

you might want to wear disposable gloves when you prepare seed/ keeps your hands clean also I know some can be toxic as well as messy.

Yea my wife was kinna worried with me handling stuff before I cleaned up... but I wasn't eating them :p

The leaf and petiole tissue will burn your skin right up tho, I had a bunch get jammed under my thumbnail and it burned me bad enough that it eventually scabbed over and grew out from under the nail...

IMO, you shouldn't have dried them out overnight, as Alocasia seed viability goes away really fast when they are dried out. I never dry mine out, but soak them overnight in RO or distilled water. Let us know if any of them germinate after being dried out.

Yea, the more time I thought about it I decided that drying was probably not a good idea, luckily they get a good soak while I cleaned them, "overnight" only equated to about 6 or 8 hours... Hopefully I didn't kill them all then, or since then...

No signs of germination yet, the weather and my schedule haven't helped either.

I don't know about Alocasia seeds, but Anthurium seeds can take 2-4 weeks to germinate even this time of year.

I got great germ rate!
There's just short of 50 plants showing, most have a true leaf, several are starting on their 2nd leaf.
It's way too early to make many judgements but there's obvious sings of variety! A few are colored, and there's lots of different leaf shapes, I expect they'll morph quite a bit as they mature.
Even if there's nothing amazing in the batch it'll still be a blast to observe them as they grow.

I stuck a few in pots of other plants, they'll but hard to see, but here's the tray with most of them, several are too small to see.

I'm pretty proud of myself, and these little plants!
Both continue to defy the odds!


I know the pics leave alit to be desired, but I THINK you can see some of the variation in the picture.
Again, too early to get very excited but there's a lot of variety in there!
Sadly most of the ones with the heaviest color influence seems to be the "fairy tear" type that I've read about from larianns site, I assume they won't persist long...
But that's plenty of good growers in there with some banding on the stem, my fingers are crossed for good growers with unique traits...
I've pretty much given up on the idea of hybridization for profit, too much headache!
To have something that possibly 100% unique, AND interesting is still very attractive though!
Not to mention the botany lesson these little guys are giving me!





They've certainly relit my interest to cross aroids!
Working this far out of zone is a pain... All I need is 30 good days for berries to ripen, sounds easy but with my collection in the rebuilding stages, blooms will be sparse, and late, I'm hoping that but keeping some in ground, and some in pots, I'll have more options.
I really gotta get fresh plastic for my greenhouse this year!
