I'm very new to gardening and have no clue on the bugs. I found many of these on my zucchini and cinnamon basil. Are they harmful or no?

It looks like a sharpshooter, a kind of leafhopper, perhaps this one:

They are plant feeders.

Edited because I forgot to say welcome to ATP!

Not good. Leafhoppers inject saliva and suck plant juices while feeding, and while doing this they also transfer diseases from one plant to another.

My husband brought home some insecticidal soap, and it seems to be working. There are a lot less of them around, and any ones that I do see, I just pick off and smoosh. I'm hoping that soon the garden will start attracting some beneficial bugs.

Thanks again!

The one in the second images looks to be a Homalodisca vitripennis - Glassy-winged Sharpshooter
Shown below is a photo of the Homalodisca vitripennis - Glassy-winged Sharpshooter in my yard that I took 06/14/2012.
