This Iris was on our property when we moved here 38 yrs. ago.
Its a small Iris and the foliage is maybe 18" tall or less (guessing)
Its fragrance is a distinct ROOT BEER scent which I don't think I
have found in any flower! Lovey dubby

I have my guesses but that's all they would be. I will leave it to the experts on this one but I want to know what it is, too. Lovely little thing, isn't it.

Gracchus and Loreley were my guesses. Loreley has a band around the fall, I believe.

I don't think it's 'Loreley'. 'Gracchus' is not listed as having a root beer fragrance, but the HIPS pictures look right. ('Gingersnap' is the only one I know of having a root beer fragrance).

Dang. Gingersnap smells like root beer...which I don't like...but I gotta grow one now just to smell it!! How interesting. Maybe in the winter we could have a favorite fragrance thread??? Hurray!

Confused Somewhere, on one of the forums....Cubits, HIPS, or ATP....we had a thread going on the "scent" of different iris, and had quite a list going, as I remember. There are several that have a "roor beer", or "cream soda' aroma, as well, of course, as the "grape " scent of the pallidas , the "cat pee' smell of English Charm, and the "fresh washed linen " scent of English Cottage. I darned if I can find it, though Shrug! ! Also...it may have been in Mike U's E-zine ," Flags", on the HIPS site, there was an article that listed a few.
Anyway, there were (are) several with a pronounced "root beer' aroma, although, I think other "points of identification" make more sense, than scents. Sticking tongue out

Thanks you for your comments! When I have the time I will look up the info provided. Smiling
It could possibly be cream soda scent which would be similar to root beer.

Here are a couple of pictures I took of Miniature Tall Bearded Iris (Iris 'Gracchus') at Schreiner's Iris Gardens for comparison

and Dave added one of the beard, often an important feature to assist with an ID.

Gracchus is really lovely. I think I may need to order one. LOL

Guess I should have gotten down and sniffed my Gracchus while it was in bloom. Just was not one of my "data elements" this year. It is a very nice one for front or edge of a bed. Fall and standard are about equal in width at 27-28mm/just over an inch. Falls are not very droopy so blossom is fairly wide for a short one at 105mm/near 4", stem 44cm/16", leave 35cm/13" in its second year in my poor soil.

Hi, my grandfather had one very, very similar named Chenedolle, I don't remember a root beer smell but that sounds nice. You have a beautiful flower there

Close but the beard in Chenedolle is shorter and not white on the fall end. Sorry pic is so dark; camera "readjusted" itself.
