Rescued from a demolition site.
Had been planted around the base of an old tree. The leaves are serrated (correct term?) 4-5 inches, plants are about 12 inches tall and have what looks like a tiny pink flower on a long stem/stalk.

Please ignore the sand all over the leaves as these were potted up in a hurry.
Thank You!

Thanks for the suggestion of Pachysandra, but I have looked at all of the varieties and the leaves don't match nor do the flowers.

Reminds me somewhat of Ardisia. Coral Ardisia (Ardisia crenata)

I saw a similarity to the Ardisia but the leaves do not have the scalloped edge that are on my Ardisia crenata (with the red berries in winter).
Perhaps it could be the Ardisia japonica or similar? There is not a 'bunch' of flowers; the flower is single and on a long pendant. I will watch to see the flower open; maybe we'll learn more.
Thanks.

The last photo of Ardisia japonica on this page does look a lot like your plant.

Danita, good eyes! Thumbs up You are most likely correct. Thank you. Thank You!
I had to work quickly before the bulldozers destroyed everything, but (with permission) I managed to save a few plants.
I'll keep an eye on the flower bud and will upload new photos when the flowers open. (Only two flowers. Sad )

Just got back from another trip to the demolition site. Hurray! I was able to get permission to dig more plants. Even though one entire block had been leveled, there were two trees and one wooden shed left standing near house #10 where I found these plants. I dug up more of these (whatever they are, possibly Ardisia japonica or similar) as I only had 2 or 3 from the first day. I'll try to get better photos when the rain stops.
