Somewhere between 55-65 degrees. Humidity depends on what I want to do, and which end of that temp scale it is at. 55 degrees and a bit (not a lot) humid is invigorating - just about perfect for dog walking or hiking!

But when it comes to the daylilies, sigh... they want it warmer. A daytime temp of 55-65 could mean nighttime temps as low as 46-52 degrees, which means poorly colored blooms, blooms that won't open, and less than optimal plant growth.

You can't have it all!
Evaluating an iris seedling, hopefully for rebloom

Wow, I'm surprised to hear so many southerners like the same cooler temperatures that I do. I would have thought that those of you that are used to a lot more hot weather would be acclimatised to it and would prefer it. My perfect temperature...? Well, it varies, depending on whether I'm slaving in the yards or sitting on my back deck swing, or whether there is a nice cool breeze. But I definitely like it cooler. I can't seem to take any kind of heat now that I'm in my 50's, although even when I was younger, I couldn't take too much. 15 minutes in the hot sun and I'm looking for shade or cool water to cool off in.

Last year for her birthday I gave my sister a big umbrella on a stand that she could move around in the garden so she could always work in the shade! I had found when I was over there helping we would somehow always choose to work in the shady areas and would neglect the hot sunny spots. But because the weeds grew better in the sunny spots they needed more attention. It really helps to bring your own shade.

@Pistil - I need an umbrella like that. Our cast iron base is too heavy and too awkward to be of any use. Where did you buy it? Does the stand roll or is it lightweight?

It was medium weight, without wheels. She is strong enough to just lug it around. I bet one with wheels could be found. I did make sure not to buy too heavy or big umbrella, so as not to add too much weight. I think I got the stand at Target, the umbrella at a local outdoor furniture store.

Believe it or not, I have one! After many years of use the elastic has expanded a bit too much. Jack saw me wearing it and brought over the cast iron stand and an umbrella but I had to put them away. That cast iron gets heavier every year.

I cannot abide 80 which is what we've had for about a week. Seriously. I hate it.

I don't like 80F, but at this point I'd take it. It beats 100F.

Yikes. I am quickly finding that anything over 80 is not for me. So much sympathy (and admiration) to you folks who endure hot on a regular basis. I do have one corner of my east porch that catches a breeze which has been a godsend.

I like mid 70's to mid 80's with a light breeze. Cooler is fine if I'm working hard out in the yard, but I like it warm for sitting on the porch or tinkering about. It's been seriously too hot here this year - we've already had at least 2 weeks worth of triple digits, something we normally save for late July and August. Mixed with the smoke from the wildfires and my garden and I are both wilting!

I am so jealous! The forecast is for the low 80's and low humidity. I'll have the neatest, most weed free, shade gardens!
