Japanese Irises: Dispelling the Prima Donna Myth

By PollyK
March 31, 2010

Some of my customers see the pictures of lovely Japanese irises on my website and say, "I wish I could grow some of those; they're so beautiful but so hard to grow." Are Japanese irises really that touchy? No, I don't think so.

Hi Polly,

Your words are just in time for my new irises, which are popping up all over, by the way. Thank you so much. My trouble is when I go to your website, I want everything I see. Such wonderful pictures!

I appreciate your knowledge, thanks for sharing it with us. Now I know where to come when I have a problem.

Great article, thanks!

Thank you so much, Sharon.

You're in a great area for growing Japanese irises.

I'd be glad to give any help I can. I'd even love to come help you plant them, LOL.

Thank you so much Karen. I appreciate you saying it was a good read, as that was what I was aiming for rather than dryly informative.

Polly great article but I beg to differ.
I have managed to kill every japanese I have ever gotten even though I was able to finally bring one to bloom.
They hate me. Don't know why they just do. I can grow Arils and Arilbred in the midatlantic state of Maryland but JI continue to frustrate me.
Sibs, versicolor, even pseudatas like what I give them
the Japanese just take one maybe if I am lucky two looks and die

You're right, they just don't like you for some reason. I have three good customers in Maryland that do well with them.

So, what's up Anita? Are you calling them bad names, scuffing them with your feet, spitting on them, siccing voles on them?

Here they grow like weeds.

I can't imagine how you could grow pseudatas and not JI. Their growing conditions are exactly the same.

Fess up, do you have an intrinsic dislike for the JI? Were you frightened by one as a child?

LOL Anita, I know you've mentioned an ongoing problem with growing them before. I know you know your irises, but maybe check out the growing guide I posted on irises for them, and see if there is something you might be missing?

I even have a lime dam so that lime from the farmer nextdoor can not get to them.
I have two from Carol Warner this year.

we will see how it goes. Don't see green yet

Well Anita, I have a similar problem with a plant--I can not grow 4 o'clocks--they come up, they get about knee high and then just sit there and look at me until the frost kills them. I have had a few that bloomed over the years, but nothing like they should.
Everyone laughs at me about that-but they just don't like me !

Yes, I can grow the J iris and they are so pretty !

I do not know why Anita can not grow JI as she can grow anything else. I know Anita it must be the way you hold your mouth when you plant them. The ones from Carol I will say a prayer for and maybe just maybe you will not manage to kill them too. LOL

Hi All

Have 12 blooms in the medians and did 5 crosses today

Now this was not on the JI sorry Polly just had to share.

You can share that:) Mine are just peeking up. I tried a new mulch on my JIs last winter, straw. I was worried the voles might get into the straw and do some damage, but the JIs have expanded considerably, so it worked well.
