AC saves us down here, Deb. I grew up in the deep south with windows open and an attic fan going. I don't know how I survived those years. There was no such thing as AC back then, at least not in homes. I remember our first window unit in the den. It could only sort of cool that single, smallish room. We thought we were in heaven! Hurray! That was in the mid-50's. Believe it or not, according to statistics I have seen, only 10% of American homes had even a window unit in 1965.

It's 96F here and temps will continue to rise for the rest of the day. At about 8pm, they will drop into the high 80s ... Grumbling Triple digits are forecasted for most of July. Oh, it might drop to high 90s.

Someone told me that last year was the hottest year on record here and 2015 is supposed to be worse. More Grumbling Grumbling

This is the time of year that I get up before dawn so that I can have a cup of coffee before I go out and garden for a few hours. Then I spend the rest of the day inside doing my spring cleaning.

You are exactly right, Lyn. Heck, I still remember ice-boxes and milk delivered to our door in glass bottles/jugs (?). In fact, when I was a small child, I stumbled over a milk bottle and cut my ankle badly. I still have a huge scar, but over the last 67 years, that scar has moved from above my ankle down to almost my sole. I guess gravity is pulling everything down, huh? Whistling

I do know I am spoiled in my temperate PNW. No AC in house and rarely used in the vehicles. Open a couple windows for a breeze if need be. Follow the shade for yard work. Go on a warm sunny trip during the bleak gray days of winter.

LOL, Ken -- you gashing your ankle on a milk bottle made me remember the story (because I was too young to actually remember it for myself) about me taking a wire off the top of a milk bottle (apparently that's how the caps were held on way back when?) and pushing the ends into an electrical socket... sometimes you have to wonder how any of us survived!!

Absolutely fabulous day here today!! Although our thermometer read 80F, it's in an area on the NW side of our house that kind of accumulates the heat, and I think it had to be more like 75 -- because I didn't feel particularly hot working in the garden in the sun, weeding my asparagus and garlic! Mosquitoes weren't bothering me, had Jimmy Buffet playing on my Ipod, and the weeds were coming out easy because we've had so much rain recently. Just doesn't get much better than that!! Big Grin

Today is our coolest day for this week, expecting to get 93F. Still 71F at this point and garden still shaded by our house so cooler temps still enjoyable. Tuesday and Wed will be soaring triple digit dry heat once more. After that will be mid 90 to high 90's the rest of the week.

Is this normally your hottest time of the year? We are mid-90's but July/August is our hottest months. I could stand the heat better if we did not have the constant 60-100% relative humidity. We become a "steam-bath" region.

tarev ..

I am in the mountains above you. It's 71F now, but the forecast says it will get up to 99F today. Grumbling The rest of the week is triple digits with 108F forecasted for Thurs.

Ken ... day temps will be in the high 90s to low 100s through September. It might cool down a bit in October.
Not much humidity, but hot is HOT.

Yes, we suffer the same thermal heat Lyn Rolling my eyes. Initially our forecast said over 100F today, but delta breeze came last night woohoo! Reprieve! So just low to mid 90's for today, thankfully. Funny how I feel thankful at the 90's mark Big Grin Tomorrow and Wed we will join you in the baking heat mode Sighing! I am just thankful really the city trees are protecting us a bit here, got to love that shade! As much work it gives me right now with all those falling leaves it is shedding big time with this heat, that shade is a much needed blessing.

I just really wish there are no fireworks for sale inland, it is so dangerously dry.

I don't have many trees on my property and lose my shade about 10 am in the summer months.

When I wrote about it being 71F earlier, I was thinking that it is a HOT 71F. In spring, that's comfortable gardening weather.

It was 108 in Spokane yesterday and the forecast is showing more of same for the foreseeable future. Yuck! Not so terribly hot today, but this is just a brief respite...and I have to take my poor malamute into Spokane tomorrow for a vet visit. Just hope the AC in my car holds up!

They said on the news that it was a record, particularly strange for this time of year. It gets hot in July and August, but the extreme hot weather has hit much earlier than ever before.
