Wonderful plants, Rose. It's so much fun looking at all these pictures.

Thanks, but I'm only showing you the pretty ones! And the weeds are crazy this year! Wish my hosta would grow as fast as the weeds do!

A few from yesterday. My, the hostas seem huge this year. I've also had to move a few around because we lost a huge ash tree due to Emerald Ash Borer.

'Alligator Shoes' now about 30" in diameter.

I will likely have to move these plants at the end of the summer as we plan to rebuild the walkway near them; so I put them all in a large pot. The 'Baby Bunting' family. Starting at the bottom and moving clockwise, my original 'Pandora's Box' which has been struggling for years. Then 'Hope'. 'Cherish' which has also been struggling. A new 'Pandora's Box' acquired this year. I note that it has more green. Then 'Baby Bunting' and finally, 'Cameo'.

'Blue Ice' - a very small blue.

'Curly Fries', at this point, doing well in near full sun. The ash tree was south of it. I've planted tomatoes in the sun and am hoping they will get bushy enough to provide some shade.

'Cutting Edge' is registered as medium, but nobody told mine that.

I'm calling this one 'Dee's Golden Jewel', though it's the yellow I took out of my 'Jewel of the Nile' about 3 years ago.

'Frisian Pride'

'Fruit Punch' - new this year. Love the wavy yellow leaves.

'Fruit Punch' leaves. Note just the hint of pink at the edge of the leaf.

'Ghost Spirit' was misty this year from the time it emerged.

'Harpoon' - love the free-form mound
Thumb of 2015-06-23/ViolaAnn/ac86c1

'Lakeside Reflecting Glass' - streaked sport from 'Lakeside Looking Glass'

'Liberty'

'Morning Light' - looking good this year as it's finally getting enough shade from the arbor on top of it with a Clematis at the side.

'On Stage' from above

'Paul's Glory'

'Roller Coaster Ride' (with 'Curly Fries' leaves in the background)

'Sara' will get more yellow in the leaves during the season.

'Spilt Milk'

'Sun Power' was languishing in the back yard in a much darker location. 'Avalanche' couldn't take the increased sun once we lost the ash tree. I swapped them and SP is LOVING the new location.

'Tickle Me Pink' - new in 2014 and gets progressively more fluorescent yellow during the season. The tips of the leaves are just a little bit pink.

Rose and Ann, such beautiful collections.

I have such a hard time IDing hostas. Do they all change color during the season? Do I understand correctly that the leaves are different, corregated vs not, on some because of age of the plant?

Thanks for your patience with newbie questions.

Leslie, many but not all, hostas will change colour during the season. Some take awhile to get to their characteristic colour after they emerge. For instance, the margins on 'Paul's Glory' have darkened considerably in the last couple of weeks. 'On Stage' emerges with near-white leaf centres which gradually darken during the season. 'Ghost Spirit' is another in which the leaves often emerge with near-white centres and mist up during the season. This year, they emerged misty. Most of the others posted above don't change much at all except they all lose the very fresh green that they have when newly emerged.

Thanks to you and to Karen for the compliments.

Well, my hostas are not going to look anything nearly as pretty as Paul's and Ann's, theirs are just perfect. My garden for some reason....doesn't seem to grow perfect plants.
Anyhow I am just happy to be able to grow any kind of hosta down here in southeastern Alabama.
Some of these have what looks like snail or slug damage (a little of it is) but it is mostly damage from small oak limbs and twigs falling on them, being I have to try and provide lots of shade in this hot sun we have. Many of the hostas are almost hidden by elephant ears, ferns and other plants, but when they sneak out from behind the protection of the shade they pay the price and get burned.

Larry - you do well to grow hostas at all in Alabama. Good luck with that.

Karen - the one you've got labelled 'Geisha' (and no doubt bought as 'Geisha' ad most are mislabelled) should really be called 'Ani Machi'. The plant registered as 'Geisha' is thought to no longer exist. Hosta 'Ani Machi'

That is surprising that you get hosta to grow that far south! You must be doing something right! Mine will start showing stress from the heat here by the end of July. But, by then I'm tired too! Just watering and weeding until the first frost!

I was going to question the ID for August Moon, because it did not look like mine. Then when I looked it up in the database I realized that mine did not look like most of the ones in the database either.

Mine does look like the Crossview Gardens photo submitted by Joy, but man, this hosta looks so different in those other photos. So I won't question

I can't believe the difference in the pictures of anything that's in the database. When I look up a flower or hosta, I get really confused by some of the pictures that I see. Obviously there is a lot of discrepancies in the labeling of the plants that we are being sold these days. If I had known about ATP a long time ago, I could have checked on things that I bought to make sure they were right. Now I am going back through my plants and checking names to see if I have the right thing. I think the worst category for me will be lilies, as I see lots of pics that look like what I have, but with totally different names Sad

Got a rain early this morning, and the temp dropped all the way down into the seventies, so I took the opportunity to get out and snap a few more hosta photos. Some of these are repeat names but different plants in different beds, than that the last series. Mostly just to show anyone in the south viewing this forum that you can actually grow hostas. They will not get as big and pretty as the northern ones (at least mine never have), but still they are very enjoyable.
