At first it was great fun finding and transplanting the clematis volunteers until I killed all of them. I'm not sure how I killed them but none survived of the first three.

Found this one on June 14th, in the middle of a path, and had no choice but to dig it up since it was a highly inconvenient spot to raise any plant, no less a clematis. Time will tell if it survives or not.




This one I spotted last year in bloom:

It wasn't a foot tall so I bought a tiny trellis for it, not knowing if it would even survive. On June 8th my big surprise was seeing it bloom so nicely!



Though there are many other clematises within 10' of it, I went through the process of elimination and I believe the seed came from Candida Lanuginosa.

Also in 2014, I found one growing within half an inch of a Japanese iris, Dewa Banri, so I lifted part of the JI clump along with the clematis, and potted it up. I brought it into the garage for the winter and it has survived and now has a tiny bud!



Is anyone else having success with volunteers?

OH, how wonderful! I've found seedlings of Princess Di and Sweet Autumn the last few years - I carefully potted them up and a few have died but some are doing well, but no buds yet. I'm waiting somewhat patiently for them to 'leap'...
Don't you just love finding free plants! especially clems!!!

Free clem's are more fun than any other free plant. Generally I get "free" cleome - not such a bargain!

I've been having so many volunteers from "Abundance" that now they just get ripped out. I've also had some from "Madame Juilia Corravone" one has developed a white stripe up the centre of the petal.

My friend gets many many volunteers in his garden and has found some real Jems! He grows mostly species so the flowers are small but sometimes so abundant they cover the plants. One is so dark it looks black!

I'm also now at the point of wanting to rip out volunteers but I just can't force myself to do it! I think they're coming from Nelly Moser but there's a chance they could be from Omoshiro, and then I'd really want to keep it.

Our Omoshiro #3 bloomed more than two months this year!
