Btw Alex, you had asked about using tap water or distilled water to water your new Orchid. I would not use distilled water.

Okay that's cool, tap it is then.

I liberated a moth orchid I had growing in spag moss, I attached it to wood instead. Cut off the majority of roots as they were rotted. sprayed it down with mericle grow orchid fert and hope it heals.

I used to have one Brassia before in 2010. Brassia Rex 'Waiomao Spotless' Quite a beauty, however, I really have a hard time with humidity. It did manage to bloom in June of 2010 indoors by our west facing window, but the pseudobulbs are just wanting more humidity got wrinkly fast. I have to admit I was really new with orchids then, so ambitious of me to try it, but it was a good challenge, and I learned a lot, sadly after it has bloomed it went downhill. Really prefers being warm and humid. I was also not sure how to handle it come winter time, so I ended up with just 2 pbs, one totally leafless and eventually kaput.

So is it hard to grow, maybe, it really just depends on the care you can provide as long as you keep it very moist and warm all the time. It is one very thirsty orchid for sure, especially in my very dry area.

Good to know... Maybe if I keep my room very clean staff will let me run the humidifer all the time right now its just in winter. My room has had issues in the past with humidity but thankfully the clieing is repaired and now all i need is a humidity tray

I got the orchid in the mail last night. It was shipped in a box with air holes and wood support beams Right now its directly under my light system.

Tried to make a video of it but as luck would have it the camra ran out of power. I called rivergate gardens where i got the ochid from and they said use distilled water not city water. i brought plenty of distilled water at cub foods, 5 gallons. and in three of those five container i added orchid love fertilizer.

The guy at rivergate told me to drunk the orchid in water and then let dry out/ water once a week. this friday i will water the brassia orchid.

I would surely never water my Orchids according to a tight schedule like that, made up by someone who has probably no idea of how sunny/bright, well ventilated or not, what temperature etc etc, what your growing conditions are.
I would check the medium, if it is approaching dryness I would water the Orchid thoroughly, let it drip off and put it back into its spot. Whatever the day of the week! If you water your Brassia as suggested by the vendor, you might look at accordion pleats on your plant in no time flat.

It's pretty clear you did not buy from an orchid grower but a florist outfit. His directions are just nuts and the price you mentioned before should have clued you in that they know nothing about the orchid business. When you are a newbe get with a society whose members can help you. Brassias are not expensive. Don't pay out the kazoo for learning plants.
Pull up American orchid society and go to 'Orchid Mall' for a vendor list and I think there are a few in your area even. Always start small till you get your wings and good luck next time.

Hope you can post a photo so we can all see the current condition and manner it is planted in. Smiling

Just to add, I don't use distilled water either to my orchids, I only use distilled to my carnivores.

Yep, I never used distilled water for anything by carnivores and to tell you the truth, I am using regular tap water (or rain water when it falls on the plant) on one I am rooting and I see no problems whatsoever.

There are natural trace elements and minerals that are removed in the distillation process. Orchids needs those trace elements too. If it rains a lot in your area, you can try to collect rain water, they love that. I wish we have rain here..sadly, nada.

i guess I could use rain water but I don't know when the next big rain shower is going to hit. I'll check the weather. Right now its either distilled or tap and I heard tap is bad because of clorine. I'll call 'orchids limited' and see if the cultural info i got fro rivergate is right for the species. the rivergate people knew it was a tree growing species/ that they like to be tight in the pot and that its a wonderful orchid and has preformed well for them I do know thin rooted orchids like to be watered more then fat rooted ones, or so I have heard.

Alex, I presently have over 600 orchids, and if I totaled them all up over the last four years, I have grown twice that (I have a tropical plant business). I have used only tap water (with supplemental rain water when the plants are outside from April through October) all these years. When they are in greenhouses during the fall and winter months, these plants only get tap water. My water is city-water and is chlorinated. But I have good tap water with low soluble solids. The chlorine doesn't seem to bother the orchids at all.

All I can do is tell you what I do. You'll have to make your own decisions on how you grow this single orchid.

Certain plants, like salvia for example, do not like chlorine. Orchids are not bothered by it.

Okay. here is the instructions I got from the wholesaler.

Oncidium care

oncidiums are one of the easiest orchids to grow, and with a few simple basic requirements they will reward you with years of ever increasing long lasting blooms.. onicidiums are epiphytes, they grow in trees so roots growing out of the pot into the air is normal., onidiums are in the intermediate temperatue range of ochids provide temperatures that are up into the 80's during the day a few days of warmer temps are okay but 70- 80 is ideal
night temps in the 50's is okay i've had temps in the 4os and mine are doing fine. onicidiums like lots of light, 2,500 foot candles which a south winter should provide. keep you orchid back from the window as it can become intensely hot close to the glass and a bit cold during the winter. bright not direct light ocidiums like at least 50% humidity as most orchids do A humidity tray , misting every few days anfd grouping plants around your orchid should do the trick. water your orchid once a week throughly wetting the bark we recommend using spring/rain or distilled water not city water onicudiums do like a good drying out between waterings so don't overdo the misting. the number one killer of orchids is over wet roots keep the pot out of standing water every other week provide a weak 1/4 the strength the recommended dose fert to your water any 20 20 20 fert is fine however there are ferts made just for orchids that work best. we ae an organic farm so we place worm castings on the surface of the medium which lasts for several months good air circulation is also importent an open winter in the siummer months or a fan during the winter months work great. Avoid any a/c or heat ducts blowing directly on your orchids

If this is indeed the cultural sheet provided by a seller, I would get away from that seller as far as possible and never buy from that person again.
I think I would like to bow out here.
