I'm really looking forward to seeing how some of these guys perform this year now that some have been in the ground going on 2-3 years. S. mexicana 'Colima' was about 10 ft tall in it's first year. I'm hoping it spreads into a good sized 'patch'...I'm happy that this particular gesneriiflora made it, as s. gesneriiflora 'Mt. Form', right next to it didn't live...go figure. Thankfully, I'd already taken cuttings last Fall.

Sherry, These blooms are so beautiful! Lovey dubby Most of the Salvias you've posted are annuals in our zones, but we do still grow quite a few of them anyway. Occasionally we can get some of them to overwinter. They surely do make beautiful accents in the garden! I love that Omaha Gold! Big Grin

lol...yes, it's so much easier here. This is great salvia country. When I'm on various salvia or hummingbird forums, I'm amazed at what everyone in winter-cold zones go through to grow their salvias. I couldn't be so dedicated. When I first started growing a lot of these I worried about the hardiness of some and I don't even really get frost here. Then I'd find that many people are managing to grow them in really cold winters..hardier than I thought. I'm still collecting salvias that I don't have....kind of a 'sickness'..lol...

Richard F. Dufresne produced a PDF document listing details about MANY Saliva. If you know "mamajack" you can ask her about it.

It was the most complete list of Salvia I ever heard of.

Just on the remote chance that i might have one kind of Salvia seed that you experts lack, here's my complete list below. Some are "out" but I would split or trade almost any I have.

This was my first year SUCCESSFULLY starting from Seed, and even this year, almost half the varieties I attempted didn't sprout or pooped out before I got them into 3" pots or the gorund. (Now, I soak Salvia seed overnight before sowing in a plug tray - usually with a little hydrogen peroxide. They swell up like frogs' eggs and sprout faster. And I overwater them less.)

Even late as Spring and I were, one variety from Hazzards flowered almost as soon as it got full sunlight:
Salvia nemerosasylvestris "Amethyst Blue" [P Zone 5]

I wish ATP supported tabs or tables or a shared database!

Concise List of All Salvia

S.nemerosasylvestris "Amethyst Blue"
S. transylvanica "Blue Spires"
Salvia superba "Violet Queen"
Salvia x superba "Blue Queen"

Salvia splendens "Bonfire"
Salvia splendens "St. John's Fire"

Salvia farinacea (?) tuinkabouter
Salvia farinacea Victoria (out?)
Salvia farinacea (?) evelyninthegarden

Salvia coccinea 'Coral Nymph'

Salvia coccinea 'Forest Fire'

Salvia lyrata "Purple Vulcan"
Salvia lyrata, "Purple Knockout"

@DomehomeDee, it might be best if you started a new thread in the Agastache and Salvias forum, it may get more attention. The last post before yours here was back in 2011.

@wcgypsy - Seeds from S.splendens seem to have a particularly short period of viability. I've sown some that I got from Robin Middleton a couple of years ago and none have germinated (so far) despite the same seed germinating like cress for the first couple of years. In contrast I sowed my own seed from last year at the same time and placed them next to the others and got 100% germination.

longk......thanks for the info...I will zip bag a couple of seeds to see how they do. I grew a lot of salvias in SoCal, but didn't expect to have them do well up here in the damp Northwest and the seeds of various salvias that were still in my seed bags were just leftovers....surprised by how many of them have germinated that I didn't expect to and are doing quite well here. I don't know that Yvonne's would do well here at all, but Dee is quite a ways South of me in drier conditions.....

On the whole salvia (and most Lamiaceae for that matter) have quite a long period of viability. I have recently germinated some seed from 2009.
