A strain means it is not a clone, it is not an exact replica of another lily, But more likely closely related. So they will not be identical to one another, whereas clones are .

so do they work on the strain then to get a hybrid eventually that is exactly the same or a clone...??
I have several of the same type of tetra trumpets and they are all strains and look exactly the same........

Strains are started from seed. I assume pollination is somewhat controlled. Several Chinese trumpets are strains, like Pink Perfection and Golden Splendour. That's why the depth of the pink color in Pink Perfection varies from one plant to the next, they're all some shade of pink, but some are very pale and others may be deep, rich pink. If a particularly dark color shows up in a batch, it may be cloned and named.

I just wish the growers would weed out the light colored outliers, they would have fewer po'd customers. Back in the Oregon Bulb Farm days I believe the strains were much better.

Note when "Midnight" is sold (they don't always tell the customer it is a strain) they almost always describe (and show a photo) of a very dark purple lily. So you order and what do you get? Something that is almost white! I have seen more complaints about that one than any other!

griesbach tetra trumpet

this is the trumpet that I posted under lilies that bloomed that I had no idea what it is......
but they are calling all griesbach tetra trumpets strains........on the Lily Nook Site
I have quite a few of these in my mix trumpets I bought from them.......this must be some yellow strain that bloomed but I see one that is going to be some pink strain as well

I agree it would be nice to have a distinct flower that is the exactly the same...........then all the shades in between............

wander why that has not happened yet with pink perfection or golden splendor since they are both very popular lilies.......
but looking on the site again they are calling them all strains as well....
