By Horntoad

In the past I have encountered several problems when it comes to saving seed. This year I was able to solve all of these problems with the use of organza bags.

I live on a corner, and many people help themselves to seeds from my yard.
Bagging some blossoms lets people know that I collect seeds, and they are not as agressive.

Great tips, and well-organized! You're even concise, which I can barely spell.

Thanks Rick. That was going to be my question - where to buy. I just ordered several. I save mostly poppy seeds (more than I could ever use) and have found now that a couple of annuals actually self seed here. At least they did last winter: Baby's Breath, Bachelor Button, Alyssum, Lobelia. Never would have thought as I have terrible luck growing them in pots.

Thanks for a great article. A wonderful idea. Thank You! both.

Thumbs up I love learning new things from the good gardening folks on ATP and Cubits!

A while back I had written an article for ATP to complain about a certain plant that sent seeds flying all over my yard. I first learned about the bags during the Hog Wild Piggy Swap over on Cubits, but this was the first season that I used the organza bags and enjoyed great success. Today I posted a comment to my own article with a link back to @Horntoad's current Article/Idea...http://garden.org/thread/view/38131/Organza-bags-to-the-rescue/#new_post

Thank You! Everyone!

Wow! I had internet trouble and was offline for a couple of days. I got back online and found over 40 system messages. I didn't even know that it had been approved, much less run. Thanks for all the comments and thumbs. I started using Organza Bags from bud to seed method for the first time this year and it has worked out great. I have been able to save thousands of hibiscus seeds and so far no sign of hibiscus beetle damage.
I purchased all my bags through Amazon.com. Just search for Organza bags and you can occasionally find some good deals.
I think the 6 X 9 bags that I use most were about $6 for 100.

Great article. Hadn't thought about expanding to my flowering plants. I use the bags for my heirloom tomatoes so they don't cross since I like to trade. It's also a great way to replenish a favorite variety when I run out of seeds but don't want to have to purchase new ones. And I can be pretty sure they haven't crossed since I bag before the blossoms open.
