Let's see your jumbo propagations!

The trunk on the left (Dracaena marginata 'Tricolor') was added to this pot as a cutting this past fall (with regular D. marginata that has a little air plant in the crook of its' trunk, a Begonia.)
Thumb of 2015-07-21/purpleinopp/f5fd92

I just added the piece of Ti plant (Cordyline fruticosa) in this pot a couple hours ago (with existing D. marginata 'Tricolor' trees.) Pretty sure I got the stem all the way to the bottom of the pot. Hope it makes roots all along that length, like the Dracs do, so I can raise it a little whenever I repot, for an interesting exposed-roots look that I like, although I had to put the rock there to stop squirrels from constantly digging in this pot.

This is a start from the momma trees pictured behind it. 2 years ago i bravely cut back my 15ft ficus trees down to a manageable 10 ft tall. Most of the cuttings took and we're given away. One i am using for Bonsai. This one i am growing into another tree. It is 5 feet tall now. It looks like the mother trees need another haircut soon!

An update on the cutting from the first post/pic, planted sideways to force a dramatic bend in the trunk, pic from a few months ago:
Thumb of 2017-02-01/purpleinopp/7f196a

The stem on the right in that update pic is my latest really big cutting, snapped off this weekend:
Thumb of 2017-02-01/purpleinopp/4aa09d

And stuck back in the same pot:

All of these were propagated by cuttings at least 18", up to 36". This allows for 6-12" of stem to be submerged and take root. The root systems that result from this kind of cutting are amazing!

Not including the tiny 'White Jewel' in the next 2 pics which is still too small since purchase to trim, for my taste.

Either today or next weekend, the tallest top is coming off of the tallest tree in this pot. It's too tall to get light inside.

Coleus, the stem on the right. This is just one of about 150 stems that I will keep over winter, some in water all winter as pictured, some will get stuck in pots of other house plants that have air or elbow space available. Having 3-4 nodes of naked stem allows them to be stuck very deep, so they stay upright.

This is timely. I have a D braunii and just up-potted slightly, but was debating cutting the tallest stem. I'm happy to think it could root without wasting all that stem, I was not sure how long a piece to use. It's probably 3 feet and mostly leafed.
Plant it and they will come.

I cut stems of that often, but like you said, not until they get to about that same size because they retain the leaves so long. I don't want to waste any leaves. When there's enough naked stem at the base to be able to stick a stem into a pot all the way to the bottom, then I cut it. Usually 2 new stems come up from the roots of the mama, not the stump, and none of the cut pieces have failed to root.

Looked at my tall Drac braunii today - as luck would have it (not) the tallest stem is still very leafy for most of it- no easy decision to cut now and start a new fun experiment Sticking tongue out

Cut this Yucca trunk last fall and stuck it here, with about 18" of stem buried. Piled the bricks around it & wished it luck.

More oversize Y. elephantipes cuttings, stuck in this big pot and ignored over winter. All of the green leaves appeared after being watered, after about 4 months of being ignored.

Yeah, very!! I was shocked!

I remembered the stems being a bit more upright but I don't blame the shifting if I'm going to ignore for so long. No idea what to do with those now. Curiosity is satisfied, it worked, but I need to fix it up and try to coax someone into taking it to their house.
