Tell us about what you know/experiences here.

--- Not that something bad will always happen to a bud that opens after it has been in a fridge, but what might be some possible scenarios?
- Might they not be as big?
- Might the petals tend to stick together?
- Might they open somewhat abnormally somehow?
- Changes in stamen or pistil development?
- etc.?

--- Do the flower spikes or flowers themselves do any growing while in the fridge?

--- What temp is your fridge at?

--- Any other morsels if advice?

Ahh.... when I saw that 'black heart' the first thing I thought of was Charles Kroell. How lucky you are to get seeds from some great hybridizers. Thumbs up

I would like to hear from those that are crossing these beauties! I am just beginning to collect true lilies. I have a few like AFRICAN QUEEN, BLACK BEAUTY, STAR GAZERS and a few others. One ? Will they all cross or not ? Is there a lily thread about hybridizing on here? I have a few dl seedlings and would like to learn more.

Thanks,

Teresa in KY

Those lilies you are having is trumpet, orienpet and oriental. They do not cross easily. You can read more about the technique here: http://www.mikesbackyardgarden...

Your best luck will be to cross like with like. Cross trumpets with trumpets, orientals with orientals, Asiatics with Asiatics. Orienpets are the result of wide crosses between oriental and trumpet lilies and are generally not very fertile.

Like daylilies, lilies can be diploid, tetraploid, or weird things in between (triploid, polyploid... difficult to work with). Forget about Black Beauty, that one is a mule, so to speak.

If you want to be sure of the parentage, you must protect your cross with a foil cap.

Lilies are generally self sterile, so make sure you use different cultivars.

Well, in a nutshell, this is just a bit of starting information.

That's a really good link you posted, Grapus. Although, if it were me, I would put unripe seed pod stems in water, if they couldn't finish ripening outside, rather than hanging them upside-down to dry.

Regarding embryos, these are some pic of the "lines" (embryos) withing the seeds. They are not always in the middle, I'd say 90-95%, though. Sometimes they hide. I always plant the seed if it looks fairly good, even if I don't see an embryo. "Plump" is a relative term. The outer portion is usually like tissue paper, or thinner. The inner portion is about paper thickness, or thicker. This would be a plump seed.

Most lily seeds look similar to these:

!4 months ago, i purchased ,pink trumpets seeds , from Lisa Hunt...Today I unearthed , many 'golf ball' sized bulbs that will bear a 1 flowered stem[[at least]- and i am certainly hoping they will come into flowering on song with the lily show in January,.,..,I am absolutely loving the returns i have now, from past seed plantings I tip my hat to you.
