Don't forget the named cultivars that you buy from a vendor that turned out to be the wrong cultivar😞. Then you try to get the vendor to ID the wrong cultivar that was sent (which sometime they can't) and the search begins.
I name my NO ID's, their names are NO ID tag 1, NO ID tag 2, NO ID tag 3... Sticking tongue out

I have some tagged that way, as well, Barbara...but I go in for more of the 'Tom's old blue", or Liz#1, or "Mrs. B's", sort of "name". Makes 'trading noids" more fun !! I'll give you Tom's red for one of Mary Ann #7 ! Then, as I grow them out, and start comparing "features", "Tom's Old Blue" might get an addition ....on the tag, and in my log....."possible Perfection".....and when I manage to find a "verified "plant of Perfection, to grow as a comparison.......and they match !!!! YIPPEE Hurray! !!! The tag, and the log, get a "name change" , and I (as well as Tom, !!) have one less noid, and another iris finds it's name Thumbs up

gemini_sage said:I used think more like that, and had a need to know what I was growing. Then at some point someone points out that something I thought I knew the name of was actually mislabeled, but I'd grown to love it. Suddenly realizing the name I'd applied to it for so long was incorrect didn't decrease its beauty or garden worthy attributes, and so began an ever increasing number of noids. Some of the most gorgeous and vigorous irises in my garden are noids.

Totally agree. Some NoIDs are named some where and are too beautiful not to enjoy. And some of the winter pleasure of irises is scouring databases trying to find a name to match. I have named some NoIDs because it is easier to refer to them by name, but my label says (l) for like

Yep, I got some NO ID's from Neal this year, they are going to be named NO ID from Neal # ?. ...
If I'm correct I think that is how Tom's red Iris was finally identified.'
If we shared our NO ID's with each other then I think the NO ID's have more of a chance of being identified.

Someday we'll all be gone, but many of our irises will remain. The survivors will all be noids then.

I can't choose which ones I'm most anticipating seeing bloom, as there are so many that you generous folks have sent over the course of the summer, but I do have some new ones to anticipate. Just returned a while ago from the Bluegrass Iris Society rhizome sale with some goodies! I got to meet Jane, and she is as lovely and sweet as can be! She brought Alcazar, Persian Berry, and Lavanesque for me, and I purchased a 2012 Van Hook intro called 'Taylor P. Made', as well as 'Lovely Peggy' (George Slade, 1990), and (SPX) Paltec (Ferdinand Denis, 1926). I purchased a membership too, and next month is a members only rhizome sale that should be fun!

My "Twirly Girl noID", probably a bee pod from 2 of the 3 iris that lived on the property for a long time, or just Fabian x Fabian; is probably my favorite. She was in the front of the house with great clumps of Fabian only, so Fabian x Fabian is probably most likely. None of my crosses between the 3 original house iris made it, so no experiments to see if I get anything similar will happen this year.

The one I most looked forward to this season was Cherry Tart. I am glad it bloomed.

Well, I've just created some NOIDS! A teenager was helping me yesterday. We were re-doing a bed, adding amendments and such. I had 6 or 7 irises that I had to move, so I wrote their names on their leaves....and left the boy to dig them out and finish refurbishing the bed. When I came back, he'd done a lovely job- and there was a pile of
rhizomes set aside. However, there were many with no names on the leaves! The increases! So now I have 8 "named" varieties, with no i.d.! I'm debating whether to pot them up or plant them in another bed - to be i.d.'d next season!

You'll like Paltec, Neal Thumbs up , it's a neat looking bloom, once it settles in a bit (first couple of flowers were 'flatties") and it seems to show some "re bloom", or "continuous bloom" traits, as well. Mine produced a second stalk from the same rhizome , about 2 weeks after I had cut the first, spent stalk. Another gardener has said she is seeing the same thing.

Barb -- I like your NOID better than Devil's Riot too. Did you buy DR from a dealer? Or get it from a friend? You can see how the two could be confused.

Mary Ann,
I got it at a big box store. It was before I joined this forum and found out what is labeled on the iris package will probably not be what is inside the package. I'm just surprised the NO ID Devil's Riot is kinda like the real Devil's Riot.

I can't wrap my head around "NoIDs" period. I don't get it. I would never have a NoID in my garden.
I really do want to know what it is I'm growing. I enjoy finding the information about each Iris I grow,
including the Hybridizer, date of introduction, and variety. But I do see that there are an increasing
number of individuals who end up with a lot of NoIDs in their gardens that were given to them from
family and friends. Smiling

Most of my NOID's have come from growers and our club sale. There were a few on the property when I moved here. I lost the tags to some over the years (plastic tags!!).. NOID's happen. Smiling

How about 'Parvin's Pinot'? It's got that little dart too.

I bought "Devil's Riot" from Walmart. I wonder what I will get.

Funny, Paltec went on my want list today.

I am pretty much only buying rebloomers and Space Age these days, so everything else just goes on a want list.

Most anticipated for 2016 - if it blooms, is Frequent Flier.

Barbara, I got mine from Tom last year, so he may have an opinion on it.. I was very happy when I saw it bloom. It exceeded my expectations. I like it better than Devil's Riot.

I don't have Parvin's Pinot. A friend of mine had taken a bunch of irises to a farmer's market and stopped in on her way home. She was going to throw out the extras, so I rescued a few things to stuff in boxes that I was going to ship. Parvin was one of them. The pictures look close though.
