I haven't really noticed many prolifs this year but then again I truly haven't looked too closely. Shrug!

I have two prolifs on the same scape of Raspberry Wine. Thought I would have tons since we had so much rain this year.

A prolif trade is a great idea, Lisa!

I checked all my plants for prolifs, but only found one plant that has them. A seedling of mine. This is the first year sense I've been growing them that I've found so few. Weird year. We've had too much hot weather and it's been extra hard to keep all my potted plants watered. This hot weather isn't normal here and I am not enjoying it. It's making me feel like I have too many plants, now how on earth could that be possible? Hilarious!

cybersix said:do they grow on the scape where the leaves grow?

Yes, they grow where the scape has a leaf or a bract or possibly a branch - that is, anywhere that there could possibly be a bud/growing point/meristem in the angle (axillary bud) between the scape and the (leaf, bract, branch, etc.).

cybersix said:So you need to leave the scape on the plant to see if it will produce a prolif, or do they grow while buds are on the scape?

I have never seen a proliferation develop after all the buds are finished. They often start to grow even before any buds open but can start to grow later. Some daylily growers advise that if you see a proliferation that you want to keep alive and growing as long as possible, to pollinate one of the flowers so that it sets a pod. That way the plant will keep the scape alive for longer than it would have. Sometimes I have noticed that when all the buds are finished (and no pods are set) the scape dies and the proliferation also starts to die; sometimes the scape stays green after all the buds are finished (and no pods are set) and the proliferation also stays green at least for a while.

Maurice, thanks for that info. It is true, the ones that I have been setting pods on look healthy but I have one that is turning yellow. The scape is almost dead/no pods. Thanks for bringing that to my attention.

Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing I was just thinking the same thing the other day. As I get older, I find that it is harder to keep up with the weeds and tending to the plants. Even though hot weather here is normal this time of year, the humidity has seemed worse, so just going out to pull weeds is a chore, something I never minded in the past.

I totally agree about the humidity! I have hit my senior discount 55, so I am also feeling more reluctant to work during the heat of the day. I get out early most days to weed and water if needed.

Humidity IS worse this year and heat index is much higher. I work in early morning and also late afternoon depending on severity of mosquitoes. Angry Sticking tongue out (Mainly though in late afternoons due to work.)

Maurice - What you wrote is exactly what I have noticed in my own garden concerning the development of prolifs. I didn't see as many this year as I typically do. Not sure why. And the ones that I did see prolifs on were mainly spider and UF forms. When I amended my seedling bed and moved plants around, I lost one of my best growing seedlings and prolif makers. I was shocked that it happened because other seedlings were not nearly as big or had such nicely developed roots. Yet it died. Lesson learned well by me! Do not move plants in the heat of summer ... ever! Sad

I like the idea of a prolif trade, too! Smaller plants to share and ship with no digging involved, though the roots would have to be pretty well developed on them to survive transporting. Sounds like a great idea! Maybe next season we can start a thread for those who would like to do an exchange?

Getting older is not for the meek and mild. Gardening is for the tough ... so it is definitely getting harder to maintain my garden areas as I get older. Someone needs to develop an age-reversal pill !!! nodding

I've had them in the past and just stuck them in the ground. I left some of the scape above and below the prolif (mostly to help keep them upright in the ground). They all grew well with no special care other than watering if the weather was unusually dry. I've just seen one in my garden this year. Don't remember which plant. There was one year in the past when there were a lot of them forming. I recall one was Trahlyta and I think Forty-second Street too.

Painted Bunting is a great daylily!
I've never seen any prolifs on it.
I have it in 4 huge clumps! Great increaser, It has a long bloom time with tall scapes.
It can be a little splotchy sometimes.
