Becky, I think it's important to pot them as soon as the roots reach about an inch long, keep the plant cool moist and shaded for the first week or so.
I am in southwest Florida, and am able to drop purslane cuttings into water where they will root within a week. From there I plant them, and before you know it they are taking off. They make a beautiful accent in my butterfly garden.

Hi & welcome, Flowers!
I'm glad I did some cuttings from the few store-bought plants I got. Most of the mama plants are already dead, though no other plants around them look sad or ill, and the cuttings are looking fine. I think I'll stick to seeds in the future, the adjustment from peat filled with bits of styrofoam to ground dirt seems too extreme, and I'm sick of picking bits of styrofoam out of beds.

Yesterday I took cuttings of overwintered ornamental purslane (Portulaca umbraticola.)

Will put them in the ground today.
Did anyone else save any over winter?

TYVM! I made sure to put that pot as close to a S window as possible (while it was inside for winter.)

I have some that survived outside this winter, others died.

Hi ya'll,
I'm new to gardening, new to the forum and definitely new to purslane! I just bought one at Walmart that they were letting die. After a new pot and some fresh soil it's doing great. I has no idea what it was at the time, just that I knew it still had enough life left to save and now I absolutely love it. My question though is, I understand that it's an annual. Is there any way to keep it alive over winter or will I just have to get another one next year?

Kim, P. umbraticola is definitely not an annual, just not hardy in your zone. Put it near your sunniest window for winter, either the mama plant or cuttings.
